  • chances of another Easts immortal?

the new Immortal/s is announced tonight. One or two immortals will be getting announced. Dally M, Dave Brown, Brian Bevan and Ronny Coote are nominated. Their biggest competition will be Norm Provan, and either Mal/Lockyer to appease the qlders.

Can't see them picking Bevan as all his achievements were in England. Coote was ultra successful, and is in the team of the century. Brown's records will never be matched, and Messenger was the game's original superstar.

What do you think the chances are of another Roosters player joining Artie and Bozo in the Immortals?

could never understand why Messenger wasn't the first immortal chosen ? If its to do with onfield success, it must be hard to overlook Norm Provan ....10 successive premierships (3 or 4 as captain/coach)

I'd love for Ronny to be named. It's so subjective, may as well share the glory. Dally and Provan already have major gongs named after them.

Weren’t they not allowed to use pre-WW2 players originally?

Out of the list I only ever saw Lockyer play so it’s hard for me to judge. I’d say Messenger should get in just because of his standing in the game and maybe Mal/Provan considering they’re the two that come up just about every time this immortal thing has come up.

Every member of the team of the century should’ve being made an immortal automatically, then add on others.

When told he was nominated for the Immortals and asked why he should be chosen, Mal Meninga said:

" A number of reasons. I guess throughout my sporting career, I've had the urge to do community work and I think I've worked really hard on that aspect in my 16 years in Canberra and the thing about that is that I was a public figure and I was put on a podium, I was just a person out there making sure that I was... I'm buggered. I'm sorry."

Dally Messenger will be the next immortal 1 million percent.
So to answer your question, one.

The concept has always seemed a little strange to me, I don't know why we don't just have a hall of fame that acknowledges past greats instead of the immortals. By picking 3 dragons from basically the same team and era it ruled out picking the best player of a certain generation .
I would go with messenger and coote.
I think provan has been passed over too many times in previous nominations . I wouldn't mind Ronny Coote he was a brilliant player who's attacking abilities get overshadowed by his cover defence.

There is an NRL Hall of Fame, which they began this year, and inducted 100 players into as a starter. The Immortals are much more exclusive club. You can only be nominated 3 times for Immortal status, and if you are not selected in those intakes you are then ruled ineligible. The pre-war players won't get many chances, and IMO should be inducted now. They shouldn't have put recent players like Meninga & Lockyer up yet, not until the pre-war players who deserve the recognition had been inducted, i.e Messenger & Brown.

I still agree the whole concept of Immortals is needless and the name is tasteless. We have a Hall of Fame with the greats. Just have that. No need for extra-special super greats where we are constantly arguing which couple of players should be entered. They are in the Hall of Fame = They are all great!

Now that it’s open to pre-war players , we could have two new ones in Brown and Messenger, but likely just Dally.

If Provan gets picked after being overlooked four times, it means the concept and judging if flawed. He played in a solid team but wasn’t the superstar. They’ve already been picked, hence the previous omissions. And if they pick Provan, the should pick Coote too.

Also, as good as Lockyer was, he wasn’t an immortal in my opinion. No better than Freddy.

I would be be happy with Messenger and Burge from what I’ve read about them but I think they’ll only pick one pre-war Immortal.
                            ..it’ll be interesting to see

Isn't he that whinger who said "rugby league has done nothing for me" ?
                              He deserves nothing in return.
