Gould built this club. We haven’t looked back since he was brought in by Nick back in the 90’s. He would be feeling it like us

Gussy was spot on with his comments about the Chooks and he did save us from being expelled from the comp- something many of you on here forget - The Riff as you call them are in a far better space than the Chooks are in winning the comp this year and I would go out on a limb to say the GF will be between the Storm and the to called Riff. Players are offered much much more money such as Peachey was when he signed for the Titans instead of staying at the Riff - who on here would not do the same?

Johnny Tobin can add more to what I say as he would have been like me one of the very very very few attending Chooks home games in 1994Gussy took over the Roosters first grade coaching role towards the end of 1994- a club that was a basket case - had one of the biggest cleanouts of playing staff of any sporting club ever in Australian sport at the end of 1994 - I recall Luke Ricketson/ Craig Salvatori/ Jamie Shepherd (he signed later with North Sydney under the then transfer fee scheme ) and Rod Silva being retained and Gussy having to sign a host of new players for the 1995 season- just missed the finals in 1995.
Gussy signed Freddy for 1996 and the Chooks went onto to make the finals - 1996/1997(super league era)/1998/1999 - at the end of 1997 the powers that be decided(after the war have finished -ARL and Super league) that they would transition to a 14 team comp for the 2000 season - as you know Souths were chopped at the end of 1999 and others teams forced to merge to stay in the new comp i.e Wests/Balmain- StGeorge/Illawarra - Manly/Norths- others were also excluded along the way- Perth Reds/ Adelaide rams/ SQ Crushers/Gold Coast /Hunter Mariners.
One of the criteria's was making the finals which the Roosters had done so for the past 4 years till the end of 1999- that put us in front of a number of other teams who were not as successful during that period - Souths/Norths/Wests/Illawarra for instance - if the Chooks were not successful during that period they could well have been one of the clubs to be excluded - During this period 1997 onwards there were high level discussions of the Chooks merging with St George and even with Souths to stay in the comp in some capacity. !!!!-
You have to remember the Chooks were the super leagues public enemy number 1 and they would have loved nothing better for the Chooks to be excluded from the comp - Gussy did a massive job in getting many clubs to stay with the ARL - how we got Fittler - even though he was with Penrith who went to super league Gussy got him to sign with the ARL- ARL won the court case over Fittler`s contractual arrangements allowing Fittler to play in the ARL comp and for the Roosters.
Without Gussy coaching the Chooks they would not have attracted the calibre of player they did to play 4 years of finals footy during his tenure - 1995-1999 and be included in the unified comp- he was also NSW SOO coach during some of that period as well - 1992-1996.
To dish Gussy is a disgrace in what he did for the Chooks when the club could well have been finished if excluded from the unified comp - he would like nothing more than a Roosters vs Panthers Grand finalLast edited by King Salvo; 05-19-2018, 05:23 AM.

Gould was the gun coach in the early 90s so his signing was huge and attracted a lot of big name players. The super league war helped also because the salary cap was abandoned for a few years which allowed the big bucks to be forked out for the likes of Fittler.
Without the signing of Gould and the super league war the roosters were likely headed for amalgamation with the dragons or souths.Last edited by Maxy Walker; 05-19-2018, 06:31 AM.
