It was interesting listening to Jimmy Maloney last night. He wasn't surprised it was taking time for us to click. He said the whole Roosters playing system had historically been built around Pearce, and how Pearce played the game. Now that's all got to be broken down and reassembled into a very different beast. I think there's a learning process still going on, both with the team learning to play differently, and with Robbo still learning what works and what doesn't with the skill sets he now has available. On top of that, the process was significantly delayed by Cronk & Teddy having late pre-seasons due to rep duties, and then Keary getting busted almost as soon as they came back to training. Before round 2, this spine had never played together. Is 2 months really long enough to un-learn the way they've played for years, and adjust to a new game plan and methodology? I don't think so.
Our best is definitely in front of us, but it's not going to happen overnight. Don't be surprised if we continue to play some pretty inconsistent, clunky looking football for a little while yet. It's the back third of the comp where we will start to see what we've really got. I'm expecting to see us finish pretty strongly, and have a few of the highly placed sides looking over their shoulders come August/September. But I suspect we won't really see us reach our potential until next year.
Buckle up and enjoy the ride. At least we know that the only way is up. Good times are ahead, we just need to be a little patient until we get there.
Go Easts.
