I had a cousin playing for the narooma devils at the time he said fairy was just passing the ball for most of the game then he ran twice and stepped his way through for two tries untouched .
It amuses me when people say lockyer and Slater were the first passing fullbacks.
Fairfax had great hands and could tip the ball on with lightning speed and was the first high flying fullback to out jump players catching bombs. It was a shame he broke his leg as it really affected his mobility afterwards he was a fantastic footballer way ahead of his time. His support play and instinct running off Artie was brilliant.

100%. He had the best hands I witnessed under the high ball. Remember seeing him take a diving catch of a Manly bomb when I was in the upper deck of the MA Noble stand one Saturday. It was a better slips catch than Bobby Simpson.

Not sure where Fairfax finished but we did have Arana Taumata here a few years ago as captain coach......& surprise,surprise he was sacked in round 10 for 3 strikes in breaking club conduct.
I think he may have gotten a few of the younger lads into strife & was ran out of town.

Surprise not. He went from Newtown to Tumut.

Incidentally the barman in question is also known as Guru and I believe gets around the town a bit and on the local radio and works at the Royal I think these days. Used to work at the Commercial. I was a younger drinking buddy of his grandfather.

Yeah been to Tumut before. Lovely place but what about Tumet???

I stayed in Batlow for 2 weeks with a mate back in high school because his dad had some backpackers camp for apple pickers. Other than it being frigging cold (zero heating available - nobody warned me to pack some serious winter clothes) the highlights I remember are:
1. Hanging out in this smoke-filled, cruddy tent with seedy poms who basically smoked, drank and picked apples.
2. Going to Wagga Wagga for a day (which s*cked big donkey)
3. Fly fishing in Tumut with some shady farker who owned heaps of knives, caught nothing (whole day of fishing) then charged a shyte load more than anybody was expecting.

Batlow is cold & the only reason to go there is at Apple picking time to grab a European backpacker at the pub.
Wagga still does suck Donkey d**k,but getting bigger & has everything.Besg thing is the good sporting talent from days gone bye.
I drink & play cricket for the Commercial Hotel Louis N & the name doesnt ring a bell,but my missus is a Royal Hotel person so ill ask her

I lived in Newtown until a year ago then visited Tumut for the weekend,met my missus & moved here.Ended up getting a 4 bed place on acerage for cheaper than my 1 bed unit in Newtown.
Play cricket,go out in the boat,the snow & river all without the traffic,lack of parking & high costs

I know what you mean mate. I live in Canberra, but spend as much of my free time up there as possible. Put the boat on Talbingo, riding my dirt bike around the 320 acre property, and sinking a few beers around the fire at night. Paradise.

Tumut and the surrounding areas are very scenic. But bloody COLD in winter. I remember a couple of weekends spent there in 1977. I was a rep for South British United Insurance in Wagga Wagga at the time and went fishing there, camped at Tumut Pond for 2 nights, caught some beautiful brown trout, poached them in the pan, straight out of the water, still best fish I've ever eaten, and drank a flagon of Brown Muscat sitting around the campfire. Also has a great golf course, went there another weekend with 3 mates and we got kicked out of the golf club for being a bit too rowdy. Lived on pies and beer that weekend and you didn't want to be in the car on the trip back to Wagga Wagga Sunday afternoon..... we were all hanging out the windows gasping for air because the farts were deadly, then it became a farting contest......those pies have a lot to answer for. It was a big Rugby League town, I think they played some very LIVELY matches against Gundagai.

Hi King Salvo.
Not sure where its at mate but the Tumut Blues play today & ill catch up with a few lads & see what they have to say.
I surely dont think we could or should sign him after trying to better the culture at the club but who coul tell.Getting rid of SKD & Carter plus pulling Fergo into line says we are cleaning up our act as a club but mothing would shock me in NRL anymore.
All i know is he told the club that the offer in Sydney is with the Roosters via Wyong & several players have told the same story.1 of my missus best friends now lives in Perth & she has come back for a weeks holidays as catch up & ended up running into him at the pub on Thursday night.Had never met him before but ended up chatting with him for an hour & he said straight to her that he was leaving with a view to ending up at the Chooks so he certainly isnt shy about telling anyone that .
