  • Jake of all Trades.....

Dummy half play serviceable at best crap, when he is playing bad.
Virtually none existent running game from DH.
Good tackler but not a dominant hitter.
Captaincy an action rather than words man but hardly inspiring imo
Not much speed but was cleared of Valium
Sandwich hand, occasional darts and good drinker..

I have to say Jake of all trades but master of none..

We all know Jake won't be probably dropped or even lose his captaincy but how to use him best going forward?

I felt his best seasons were in the days of the 10 man interchange and our pack one of the most dominant packs in the comp which enabled Jake a platform to play from and a good rest when Mortimer subbed on for him.

The Bulldogs game he was solid and it coincided with Jake getting a good break during the game.

Going forward I think Jake should be subbed off at the 25-30 min mark by Radley. He comes back on with 20 to go and Radley finishes off the game in the backrow. Which enables a big man who needs to break to sub off.

Am I crazy thinking this is the best strategy? I would love to see how Baptiste goes but I think what I suggested is the most sensible plan to get the best out of Jake of all Trades......

    Nothing crazy to see here.
Something has to be done I reckon. Jake should not be captain and should not play 80.
I'm not sure Robbo sees it that way.

I never got to try one of Jakes sandwiches.
He might have been like the soup nazi and refuse to pass the sandwich to any customer he didn't like.
    I might've gone hungry.

He might have turned it into a Roll calling it Roll it over the dead ball line. Or Roll it dead on the 4th.....

He might have thrown it forward or too slow and an opposition forward gobbled you and it up....

Well, I don't actually consider him a captain. I think he has the job to provide us with his fascinating insights at the press conferences.
He might be the shy type.
Having said that, he wasn't acting shy when he put his stupid vendetta with Hastings above the good of the team.

                    Before my time Eddiemeister.

Are you suggesting Captain Pugwash correlates with our mighty number 9?

Getting back to the thread. I would rather Jake bake a 40 n 20 pie than a 7 tackle restart with relish sandwich...

                      Interchange strategy is very important.

Using changes for a 40m alternate hooker change, when your props consume 4 is madness. If everything works well it might be fine to plan that way, but do you get more value from changing out a third middle forward (injuries allowing)?

IMO thats why we are seeing Matterson play more minutes, essentially he is rotating into the middle third to do some work and then taking a spell. We saw experiments last year with Watson coming on to play dummy half and Friend staying on the field to play in the middle third. Its all about getting the best value from the change in a given situation. I dislike having 2 small guys in the middle personally - we are brittle in defence.

As expected, with less interchanges, players need to be more flexible and have more endurance than ever. Maybe we will see smaller guys, like Radley, being able to play multiple roles as a cornerstone of the game. I'd love to be fly on the wall when Rooster interchange strategy is being discussed.

Why they brought a specialist hooker in Baptiste back from England and haven't put him in First Grade is beyond me. He is the goods, as I saw him play at Canberra. Friend should be put in the forwards and be forbidden to touch the ball unless he's hitting it up.

therein lies the problem. He doesn’t hit it up.

That’s a blast from the past innit. The urban myth at the time was that it was deeply satirical; Master Bates, Roger the cabinboy, etc.

Why did I suddenly think of Pugwash while reading this thread............I dunno.
He was a very inept captain of short stature?????

But the myth on the crew is incorrect. The two main support characters were Tom the cabin boy and Master ????????something , I'm sure it wasn't Bates, wudda been too obvious.
