  • Beetson Assistant Coach

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roosters head coach Brad Fittler has invited Easts legend Arthur Beetson to assist on his coaching staff for the remainder of 2009.

Arthur coached Easts in over 150 games from 1985-1988, as well as a stint as Captain/Coach in 1977 and 1978.

He has more recently worked in recruitment for the Club.

Beetson will join the coaching staff as an Assistant Coach and will be another sounding board for Fittler to utilise as he focuses on turning the team’s form around for the remaining 15 rounds.

Fittler and Beetson are both members of The Centurions – Team of the Century, which was announced at the 2007 100th year season launch.

Arthur’s addition to the coaching staff completes a trio of Roosters greats currently leading the team, alongside Fittler and Adrian Lam.

He will join the coaching staff tomorrow, Tuesday 2 June.

        Not a bad move freddy.

At least this is someone with experience and some semblence of recruitment.

Maybe also a good thing, Someone in the coaching staff that is not a mate or played with current team members.

        WECOME BACK BIGMAN !!!!

He's on 2SM right now......was a personal call from Freddy.

EDIT: Has mentioned the side hasn't adapted to the new rules and the Minichiello loss was huge.

Artie calls a spade a spade, so I'm hoping Artie has been bought in to tell some of the lazy f*ckers to have a go. Lopini and Sa spring to mind as candidates that could be first in line.

He can start with Sa that's for sure and hopefully get Lopini to regain the form he showed last year. However, Artie can't play centre.

He's not a coaching director but I'm sure he will play a very similar role in that he will be heavily involved with the Jets and our juniors along with our first grade side.

Culture is an important part at every club and if you we have Beetson and Freddy as our head coaches then we're not doing too badly.

i agree that this is a good and much needed move. however to play devils advocate his coaching record apart from the maroons isnt that great.

While the 64-year-old Beetson brings a wealth of experience to the club, his coaching resume hardly throws up flattering results.

In his two years as captain coach the club finished preliminary finalists and sixth, while the Roosters made the finals only once during his stint as head coach in the mid 1980s.

In his two years at the helm of Cronulla in 1992-93, the Sharks finished 13th and tenth.

Beetson's greatest coaching success has been saved for Origin level - having guided Queensland to a one-off win in 1981 and series wins from 1982-84.

Looking at it, i don;t think Artie's role will not be a specific coaching role, more as an outsider looking in. Giving tips and suggestions to freddy on how the team will work.

Also hopefully Artie will command respect from the players, not because he is an ex rooster, more that he is a Legend of the game.
