  • Captain's challenge

With the Uate "try" debacle last night, is it time to take some power away from the game managers and introduce a Captain's challenge?
I suggest 2 challenges per half per team, and can be used for anything like knock-ons, tries, forward passes and 40-20s.

    Thoughts?

I believe they trialled it in the 20s last year or the year before but the results/findings were not shared with the general public.

Will slow the game down even further. How are teams meant to gain momentum? We may as well go and watch Yawnion.

Maybe 1 a game where the captain can change the ref's try/no try call and force the bunker to view it the other way?

Or the refs could go to the bunker if they dont see the put down - like theyre supposed to do

when does the captain get to challenge though? After he has seen the replay or before the try is awarded?

I suggest similar to the cricket, within 10 seconds of the try being scored and before any replays.
This will be sufficient time to consult with the tryscorer to see if he a challenge should be made or not.
            But am open to suggestions!!!

Not necessarily 13 ... for example, this will remove some of the "bluffing" going on at the moment, where we are wasting video ref time when a player knows they have not scored a try but it still goes for review.

It was a no try as we all know but I think the one he had disallowed was a fair try.
As for a captains call, I think its a waste of time.
Roosters captain has called for a review ......... don't worry Todd we will find something so we don't have to overturn our decission to award them the try.

Fair call... it evens out. TBH that's the message we wanna send to kids too. As a kid there's no video ref and we're taught to play to the whistle rather than being some whingie biatch who gets worked up about every 'wrong' call.

In year 12 I played some high school rugby for our 1sts and kicked a 'conversion' after the whistle that won the game. I know for fact that it went a little wide (I struck it wrong and it swung out due to some unpredictable wind as well) but it was raining hard (killing visibility) and the guys standing behind the try line said it was good. Part of being a 'good sport' was that the opposition didn't sit around going 'ARE YOU SEEEEERIOUS?!?!?' Instead, they realised that there were multiple opportunities that they missed during the game and that wasn't the only questionable call.

Or in high school basketball... one game I had a dude chasing me around the court all game demanding that I say sorry for an 'illegal foul' that I apparently did on him at some point. We were up like 80-30 at the end and I kept going 'maaan give it a rest and focus on your game, you're letting your team down!!!' Ironically he was one of those 'wrist grabbers'... won't identify the ethnic group but I find that fiery little people always get away with grabbing your wrists while you're shooting then have a massive whinge when you drive through them (legally because their hands are all over your wrists). Aaaah the good old amateur sport days

Yes professional sport is different, but as a spectator I often prefer to just move on and accept the call. One thing I like about basketball is that if the refs have NFI then (previously) they just tossed the ball up and did a jump for it. Now they just have an arrow pointing either way and spread the calls evenly when they have NFI. Honestly, I wouldn't mind that in rugby league! Like if we had no video ref and the ref just went 'NFI... benefit of the doubt says try this time'. I like the culture of just acceptibg the call and being content with the fact things even out.

Up until the conversion is taken which usually gives them a chance to see the replay. Seen some of the quickest conversions ever when the 20s had the challenge.

That would be pretty funny, opposition consulting with the tryscorer to see if they should challenge or not !

The one he had disallowed, his leg was over the sideline before he grounded the ball, the video ref did not look past the push before he disallowed it, but if he had, he would of clearly seen the leg out, and is still would have been no try.

How about we can challenge all of Cummin's calls and if he gets more than 3 wrong against us in a game he gets sacked for good (i.e. goodbye career, not that 'sacking' where they go to Thailand and party for a week then come back).
