  • Pearce & origin

I'm concerned about the effect of Origin on Pearce, and subsequently, the Mighty Roosters.

The pressure on Pearce is immense.

Daley has come out and said not only did he pick Pearce cause he is the no1 NSW half by a mile, but he has selected the team to play around and structured around Pearce's style and leadership.

This is a Huge few things to say.

I'm curious what you guys think. What effect , if any, origin will have on Pearce's mind set if things don't go as expected.

And will he be the same for the roosters?????

At least his sledging enemy Thurston is out. Best thing for Mitch

After the last two origin series he lost in he went on to help the Roosters win a premiership in 2013 and before be got injured was headed for another premiership in 2015.

I have no worries apart from him picking up an injury in the series which can happen in any game or even a training session.

      Good call.

Just that he's playing so well this year. We really need him, there is no Maloney this year

I think Farah and Gallen gone is good for the blues and especially Pearce. Also Cordner as captain is helpful.

Pearce (and pretty much every other half since johns) have been scapegoats for the last 10 years but a combination of an awesome qld spine (now broken up) and the dominance of gallen and farrah have been more the cause in my view.

The end of that spine and the two overplayers for the blues give NSW and Pearce a great shot to get back on top.

I think the origin series will help raise his game, not hurt it. Remember after the horrible 2014 origin series, Pearce played probably his best football (bar maybe this year to date) in the second half of that season. The only risk is injury but that can happen anytime.

I can't wait to see how he goes; I reckon he'll kill it. I'd love to see him, Boydy and Fergo doing a lap of honour carrying the Origin Shield.

I'm a rooster fan and I love rooster players and I want to see them do well at Origin level.

I know we say it every year but NSW must be a good chance this year. Having 2 games in Brisbane is a bit of a worry though.

After all the crap he has put up with and service provided to the club, it would be selfish to not wish him every success at Origin level this year...regardless.

There game 1 record at Suncorp is 9 wins and 9 losses, without Farah and Gallen, the ball will get to the halves and the forward might even get some offloads going, Gallen made plenty of meters, but he stifled any attack because he had no 2nd phase play. I think jake trbojevic will be great when he comes on.

                    Agreed...
                    1. Be interesting to see how we go without Farah doing all the kicking and Gallen trying to be the tough guy. Good to see Tamou gone too TBH... was always bloody useless. One of those randoms who we gave the job simply so he wouldn't play for NZ (bit like how NZ blooded JWH before he'd played 1st grade just so he wouldn't play for NSW - those were funny times). I expect Cords to play smarter rather than harder. Also, I expect Peats to let the halves take more control. I respect Gallen and Farah, but I think now's a good time to drop them.

                    2. Yeah I get it that Johns was an amazing HB in a REALLY different era of footy. Footy was professional, but people were still choofin' down durries before Origin and stuff (he was probably popping pills at Origin camp and stuff too). I think his era was different because an AMAZING half could just take complete control of the game. That still happens, but QLD's squad is so professional that they really can't be dominated by one single prodigious half. I mean in an era gone by, Todd Carney probably woulda dominated QLD and gotten in no trouble for anything. Those days are over and winning the modern game takes a lot more than having a good half. People will laugh at me but IMO had Pearce played his career through with the Storm (rather than Cronk), been selected for QLD (instead of Cronk) and basically been in Cronk's situation (salary cap cheats whose confidence and development were fast-tracked by a shonky situation) then he woulda been known as a legend. As it is... I think he's up there with Cronk. Not the same level of success/international experience, but had he not played for an ordinary Roosters/NSW duo then I think his rep would be much better. I say it honestly that nowadays, most people who hate him SECRETLY hate him because he always plays well against their team and they know deep down that the Roosters are all class.

                    3. Be interesting. Another quiet one is Hayne effectively replacing Jennings. He's an all 'round $hit bloke by all reports, but surely Roberts has done more than Hayne this seasons to justify selection. Is he in the frame, or are QLD finding a hidden clause that allows them to select him?

Overall... I'm happy with our squad this year. My only changes would be:
                    - Hayne out, Roberts in (that shared leadership thing... maybe Hayne over-plays his hand a little)
                    - Klemmer out, De Belin in

That's... about it. I wanna get rid of Brett Morris but can't think of a suitable replacement.

It's a pity they couldn't find a spot for Vaughan, but, Hayne aside, I like the look of the team. I'll try to stay positive and believe that if Pearce performs well and we win the series, he will come back an even more dominant player.

Interesting comparing the NSW spine and the QLD spine. If you take out hooker, I reckon we probably have it over them. Or, at least, cancel each other out.
e.g. I'm more excited about Teddy coming here next year than if Boyd were coming.
Cronk's a good game manager, but like Robbo said, Mitch is playing the last 20 mins of the game better than he ever has before. Jimmy's killing it. And with the combo formed over a three year period at the mighty Roosters, I reckon Pearce and Maloney have it over Cronk and Milford (Milford is a brilliant footy player, but Origin is a different ball game).

Nsw are morals for this game. No Thurston, Inglis, slater or matt Scott. Worst team they've put on paper in a decade. It doesn't have the polish that they rely on. Qld have always had the class to capitalise on the one or two opportunities that get presented. Nsw have had gluts of opportunities but need everything to go right to get over the stripe. Things much more equal this time. Not to mention milf debuting. I don't think his style is suited to origin football. Not at this stage of his career anyway.

                          And then they have Guerra...

Well said. There's a lot of Roosters selfishness on here in regards to Origin ATM.

I reckon Vaughney more than earned a start. I hope he gets a shot soon.
