  • The Elephant in the Room...

Connor Watson.....he just doesn't fit into our team at the moment. I love the guy, he brings heaps to the team in regards to enthusiasm and energy but when the chips are down he's not a middle third player. It's not helping his development using him like we have the last two weeks either. You could see when he came on tonight, instead of working his way into the game he tried to have an immediate impact and came up with a crucial error. I don't know what the future is for him, but at the moment he's a wasted interchange player. Apparently Carter has some issues, but if he sorts them out, he's a better option on the bench at the moment because he will offer more stability than Watson

Neither games have been set up for him, ideally you want him to come on when we've established some dominance. Last week we were on the back foot all second half and this week the game was in the balance for nearly all of the 2nd half.

The thing with Watson is he does have errors in him and we can only really afford those errors when we're on top.

As the season progresses he will build his way into the side, I think Robbo is still figuring out what his bench is going to look like in terms of running forwards but if it's Matterson, Tetevano & Liu then I'd say more often than not Watson will be coming onto the field in a team that's on top in the middle.

This is a very different team to 2015, great to have the talent that matches the 2015 side bu you can tell we're still figuring out a few things. It will all come with time.

        I would have to agree.

Matterson and Aubo provide us with tremendous flexibility. As does Latrell who can cover fullback.

Given the performance of Tetevano I think it's hard to fit Watson on the bench at the expense of Liu, Evans, Tetevano, Matterson (with SST at lock).

But fret not young Connor! Between Origin and injuries he'll receive plenty of chances.

For anyone who thinks he should be on the bench, who among that bench that I mentioned should he replace?

I agree, but Friend is going to play big minutes all year....so whats the options for Watson....can we afford to carry a player in case of injury? We have a few played with utility value in Maubs and Matto who can cover what Watson offers. I just don't see a spot for him at the moment....particularly after watching Tetevano tonight. I would prefer to have that forward option rather then try and carry a luxury player

            Good post.
Love the dude as well but when we're fully fit hard to see where we can fit him in. Also with the make up of the team heading forward where does his future lie??

I never really did see how him being on the bench was going to work. It's basically just acknowledging that they want to keep him in first grade but don't really have a proper role for him at the moment.

I think we'll struggle to keep him, if another club offers him a spot playing at 6 why would he stay

Good post. I was thinking the same thing. The stupid pass when we were under enormous pressure reeked of someone trying to make an impression with limited time on the field. It really is an elephant in the room.

It would be good if the NRL would introduce a player loan system similar to what soccer has. It would be great to be able to loan him out to another club for 12 months to get some game time and then have him come back a more complete footballer.

I've been thinking the same Headless Chook.

There's no harm in him playing for Wyong, playing 80 minutes in positions that suit him.

Good thread. I'm glad it's Robbo's problem and not mine.

I think he slots in nicely, a bit like Daniel Mortimer did.

Between the halves and hooker he can get game time every week and be ready for a full 80 if there's injury or we need to rest a player.

The only problem with the Daniel Mortimer scenario is that we risk losing him like we lost Mortimer.

In my view he's actually better talent that Mortimer.

I think it is important to remember we are only 2 rounds into the season and that these thing will take time to work out.

The big three pluses for me are:
                            1) Latrell Toups combo
                            2) Keary Pearce combo
                            3) Matterson finding his place in the team
                            4) Tetevano now pushing for a bench spot and showing what impact we should be having off the bench

Was thinking the same. I'd like to see him go back to Wyong and play Fullback. Let's see if he's got what it takes to take over from Gordon next year and get some FB experience under his belt.
