    Why?....................and what list.
You are always the first to point out that the game has changed, although I think you are a fan of the ole reserve grade system.
Seriously, our roster has been of an average age younger than most for a few years now, yet we will be retaining a high core of very experienced players , no matter what deadwood we release.

Everyone, even the barman , seems to put so much stake in 2018, running cap in hand to these friggen thieves that run the game (read nrl) , whinging about whatever the restraint of trade they call the salary cap will be.

I reckon it's a case of damned if you do or damned if you don't.

I actually read your posts R6......and despite your past petulance , find some of your views interesting.
But I must remember that you don't believe that any player should be dropped on poor form...................therefore any playing group you assembled would include experienced bench warmers who are paid as exclusive injury back ups???????

He played a GF with a busted jaw,if that doesn't deserve some loyalty I don't know what does.

I would hate to be in the trenches with some Roosters fans.

He and SST were by far our best in the first half of last season. Sure he makes mistakes but I reckon he is unpredictable and always gives his all.

I don't think Gordon will play next year. I will be interesting to see if LM is intended to be the long term fullback.

It's always a balancing act and I think a lot will depend on performances this year. I tend to think that if the young blokes are good enough they will force their way into the team anyway. It's tempting to clear a path for the likes of Butcher but if you give it to them easily, they may not value the same as if they had to bust their gut to get there. Still, I hope that the likes of he, Garvey, Collins and Knight get a crack at some stage this year so we get some insight into what they've got and whether they are, in fact, capable of becoming regular contributors in first grade.

Hopefully Skids has a decent year and justifies a new contract. I'd like to see him break the try scoring record. Having said that if we offer him another 2 years I wouldn't be offering him any pay increase in line with the increased cap.

This is a very important thing and something most "fans" on here ignore. Then there is the quick play the balls.
He brings alot to the team

He had about 4 good games, the rest fluctuated between average and poor. His workrate last season was well down on previous years.

Johnny Sattler played a GF with a busted jaw as well, I don't see him still running around for Souths out of loyalty. If you want to run 15th each year, fine be loyal to the same players year in and year out.

Really Cookadoodle if you think for one minute that us running 15th last year has anything to do with the players that stayed, you must be delusional.

It is more about the players our administrators let go, the competition is that close one key players omission will cost a season.

In my book last year was beyond the players control and they all start with a clean slate this year.

Let's see how they go with clean ball, maintained structures and continuity in postitions before we look for " human sacrifices"

Good sides are developed not bought and the stat about our home growns is testament to that.

The squad we have should make the 8 , if not better , if so they all deserve resigning.

So if we should re-sign SKD, surely we should extend this courtesy to Guerra, after all he was also part of our 2013 Grand Final win, scored a good try too. Or is it because Guerra was fortunate not to get his jaw broken that he gets the punt? I just don't understand why we should re-sign a player on the basis that 5 seasons earlier he played a GF with a busted jaw. Sure if his performances this season warrant another contract, I am all for it and happy for him to get one. If not though, celebrate him for his achievements and give him the farewell he deserves.

My point is if he isn't playing well enough to get one, we shouldn't give him one out of loyalty and punt a younger player who may offer a lot more in the long term. No good complaining later if someone like Joey Manu kills it at another club because we didn't give him a chance.

It's the same thing, of course the players that remained, were the ones that delivered the results. I hated that we lost RTS and Maloney in particular, would never have happened if I could do anything about it. However if going forward we keep re-signing the 17 that remained, we will be in some trouble in the years ahead. There are about 10 players in our squad that we absolutely need to keep, 4 or 5 more that we probably should keep look to tie up and the rest depends on them and how they perform including SKD. If he plays well then definitely retain him by all means for the right money. Do not pay him Centre money though to play on the Wing.

Yeah fair enough, I think I know where you're coming from.
Sport is a business now and we've got to be ruthless.

I believe that the club showing loyalty for certain players is important however.
I'm not advocating that we should persist with players way past their use by dates at the expense of young up and comers.

I guess it comes down to opinion.
I reckon SKD has been playing well enough to keep going.
Guerra on the other hand has been playing like he's actually a bunch of cats taped together and stuffed into a roosters jersey.
