  • Pearce is an example.

Of the lack of professionalism in this club.

Surely we can teach em to string a sentence together without all the "ums"?

    Chook.

eh i think it's a reflection of most footy players nowadays, unfortunately. Some do speak well though. I'm sure Freddy was something pretty nervous and terrible in his younger days.. all comes with experience

Umm Chook, with all respect and all and um, be thankful that they're still mumbling in english in your lifetime because your grandkids are going to envy you.

If we're going to bag somebody about their speech, maybe we can at least spell correctly and use the correct pronunciations.

They are rugby league players, not Rhodes Scholars.

We can, but we have to send them to 'media school', in conjunction with a very good 'lifestyle/public speaking coach' and cameras.
                    Coaching, including role plays.

Pearce's speech in the video is typical of many young guys and gals these days, you need an interpreter to understand what they're saying.

I was like it as a male teen, until I was 'packed off' to "finishing school" and instructed. :-)

"A gentleman never uses profanity, profanity is the language of the uncouth".
"A gentleman's trouser length should always be...at the top of the heel of his shoes".
"A gentleman always says 'yes', never 'yeah'".
"How now brown cow" et al. lol

This is not about the player or his inability to speak proper English. It's about the club and it's ineffectual and non existent professionalism in getting this player prepared for public speaking.

Yes Jr Jr has improved in this, but not very bloody much and that is a failing of the club!

                      Chook.

The club could, and probably should, be having all the players do media training courses as part of their mentoring.

"Don't say 'um', just pause and say nothing" for example.

In all honesty, I'd prefer them to devote more time to their on-field performances than have them worrying about using too many 'ummm's' in their interviews.

Firstly, it would not be "we" that teaches them. You are not a benefactor. Just a supporter.
Secondly, i would urge you to find other things in life that you find enjoyable. To much time in front of the screen makes chook a boring bird.

Trouble is, the players represent the club in the media, and the Public is a harsh judge.

All day every day, the club is their job.
One hour per week on media and public speaking training would be possible...and would be of great help to them in their future lives and careers after footy.
