  • Latrell's try in the Manly trial

How awesome was it? Three things struck me:

    1. Keary played right to the line with great speed (from the footage he looked VERY dangerous)
    2. Ryan Matterson's offload was awesome. He could develop into a special player
    3. Latrell Mitchell in space absolutely bulldozed the opposition. (Fergo did the same on the other side). Good luck defending our left edge and choosing whether or not to come in on Cordner or hold back for Mitchell in space!

For those who haven't seen the try its on the Roosters facebook page. I've seen it a dozen times and it gives me great confidence in our attacking ability in 2017.

Good stuff. We have some talent across the park for sure.

Not many would have scored it.

Our left edge could become the most devastating in the comp.

Latrell Mitchell certainly knows how to find the tryline.

Does that mean we'll have Guerra on the right?
Ignoring overlaps, presenting his backside to the defence and throwing the ball to the opposition fullback?

I think Keary will be a great buy. He's got a lot more speed than I'd previously given him credit for. Gets outside his man to play short to his backrower so easily. Live it looked almost like Matterson had run into Keary's hole but after seeing the replay you notice that Cherry-Evans was so threatened by Keary's pace to get to his shoulder that he plays really passive hoping te gap will close by the time they get to him. Unfortunately for Daly he can't tackle for shit and standing still doesn't help. So Matterson held his line and dominated him easily. Credit to Keary and Matto for executing that so well. Keary is very Foran-like the way he plays to the line. And in many ways similar to Maloney which I think will make the Keary-Cordner combo click into gear pretty quickly this season. His pass selection was top shelf all game. Created a heap of opportunities. At one point he got a nice flick pass away that was dropped I think by Ferguson. Would've been a try for sure. His kicks for touch were exceptional. Pearce was missed in general play kicking however. Makes it hard when we were running a play using predominantly Keary on the 4th and until Cornish came on there wasn't another genuine kicker out there to take it on the 5th. Just on kicking actually, every kickoff we had Latrell Mitchell landed it 5 metres from the dead ball line without fail. Nice change from the rubbish we saw from kickoffs last year.

There is no doubting Latrell's attacking skills but I just hope he is up for the defensive side of things playing in the centres this year.

He may find himself at Wyong when SST comes back.

I waa thinking the same regarding the Foran comparison.

They both attack the line at real speed and have the ability to ball play very late.

It puts the defence in two minds and will result in loads of opportunities for Cordner and Mitchell. Gordon could be a calming influence out the back too.

This applies to every team, but if our 1 6 7 9 all play 20+ games (same for JWH and Cords) then we're in for a very good season.

Robbo won't have the balls to drop Guerra.

I was at the trial and that try happened right in front of me, to be honest it happened out of nowhere but it was exciting when it unfolded. I kept saying to the missus "Keary is having a blinder." Well he did in the first half, his running game was first class and he reminded me a lot of Maloney.
The players who i was really impressed with were...... Keary, Tupou, Matterson and Carter. (Carter was involved in every set).

Oh and Napa was gassed after a couple of runs and he looked Fat! Even a couple of supporters sitting in front of me made comment.

                            Just my two bits.

If Robbo doesn't drop Guerra, he will be sacked at the end of the season. Guerra was a little more involved on Saturday but was dreadfully exposed in defence in the middle third. When he made first contact, the Manly forwards just kept going and he would hang on for dear life waiting for the second and third defenders. He was a large reason they found metres through the middle so easily. In attack he could barely make a dent.

As I keep saying, giving a guy $500K with zero footballing skills was a mistake of epic proportions. They should have had a succession plan to move him on when he became too expensive, guys like him are pretty easily replaceable. The best sides move hell and earth to keep their spine players and happily let back rowers, wingers and centre's go. We gave those guys a stack of money instead and lost the spine.
