  • The Biff

Was just scrolling through Facebook and up popped a clip of old Origin fights. I've got to say, it was awesome seeing some tough old blokes going toe to toe and not fearing being sent off for it.

It got me thinking- has the game gone soft today? Would you support the older game where a couple of willing combatants threw down and got the annamosity out of their systems? I reckon it would be a good thing as it would get rid of all the niggling tactics that are used now like the dog head slaps, ball tosses and the drawing of fake penalties.

I'm all for it until it develops into an all in brawl. Coming from a distance for the stink and being 3rd or 4th man in shouldn't be on but a couple of blokes getting it out of their systems should be ok in my books.

Also who in our current squad do you reckon would be some who could hold their own if it came to it?

    I'd go Fergo and Napa.

One of your past identities who is now banned started a thread along exactly the same lines as this one.

What are you taking about? If I have other aliases on here, please share them with me. If I am someone else, then you can claim to be right. If I am not, go public (away from the gay prom messages you bombard me with) and say you were wrong. I bet you won't though as you are so obsessed that you can't possibly be wrong now can you?

You know nothing about me and its still killing you. Your obsession is laughable.

Oh yeah, please stop hijacking threads. If you have nothing to contribute to the discussion, don't post at all. Not hard really. Oh wait... 🙄

Im all for it including bawls as my name attests but no cheap shots from behind 2 on one grubbiness etc.

I would say Napa, Cordner, SST, Carter and young Butcher looks like he can handle himself. Fergo goes ok but his boxing bout was a real disaster imo. Perhaps JWH too as he is one big and fit dude.

Haha, I thought you may have been into the brawl!

I went with Fergo thinking that he might be somewhat disadvantaged in a boxing ring and needing to follow form and rules. I'm sure if he just let fly naturally that he could be a goer.

I would like to see Pearce plant one on any other half really. There are a lot of good old fights on youtube too

That would be funny to see. I wonder how he would go? He might actually surprise a few.

Would get rid of plenty of the niggle that goes on. But once it's gone you can't ever bring it back. What do you do, call a press conference and announce, "we are bringing back the biff and will now tolerate blokes punching each other in the head again"?

Not to mention the legal consequences if someone got seriously hurt. Gone and can't ever come back.

Yep. It's a true shame. It wouldn't need to be announced but rather just turn a slightly blindish eye to it if it did happen to creep in a bit. Could it work?

Nah. Not in the current environment with all the anti one punch violence campaigns and so on.

Remember that the ban happened because Gallen punched Nate Myles in the face in an origin
match right around the time there was a spate of one punch deaths receiving huge coverage in the media. And they were pretty vicious punches by Gallen, seen by millions of people.

The NRL were really left with no option but to introduce the ban after that. A major sport trying to attract sponsorships and family participation etc just can't be seen to be condoning it in the current environment.

The niggle is a very unfortunate side effect of it though no doubt.

Good points Maxy. Still a shame though but at least we still have YouTube to watch some cracking old clangers.

i remember the 2010 semi final against the tigers, what a great match. Benji Marshall puts one on Pearce and the tigers in the meantime have scored a try. it gets disallowed on review and the rest is history

If a player gets an elbow to the throat,or gets a grope, he should just stand up and smack the player who did the niggle, yeah he will cop a ban, but if a few of them do it, the gutless players will then think twice and maybe the nrl will start imposing penalties to the cowards who hide behind the rule that they won't cop a smack to the face when they do their dirty tactics.
