  • Tim Simona caught betting

Lucky we didn't sign him like some wanted.

WESTS Tigers player Tim Simona has been stood down indefinitely by the NRL over alleged breaches of the rules relating to gambling.

The centre, who had been shopped around by the Tigers this summer, will have his registration cancelled if the allegations are proven.

The NRL issued the following statement this afternoon: “The NRL today issued a notice of intention to cancel the registration of Wests Tigers player Tim Simona,” the statement said.

“The notice relates to alleged breaches of the rules relating to gambling on NRL matches.

“Simona will now be prohibited from training or playing with the club until the matter is finalised.

“He will be given a chance to respond to the allegations before a final determination is made.

“The NRL will not be commenting further until the matter is resolved.”

Wests Tigers also sent out a statement confirming Simona was being investigated.

“Wests Tigers have been made aware that player Tim Simona is currently under investigation by the NRL Integrity Unit in regards to allegations of breaches of the rules relating to gambling on NRL matches,” the club said.

“The club will be making no further comment until the investigation is complete.”

    Dodged a bullet there.

Hopefully this helps us offload Copley to the Titans as they were favoured to sign Simona.

Maybe they'll come back in for Copley now.

You never know a blokes problems when you go to sign 'em.......at least if you bring 'em thorough the ranks you have a better angle on them.

Bit like buying a second hand motor.

so you get stood down if your caught betting. NRL is sponsored by sports bet and betting agencies are hardly governed when it comes to advertising on tv and radio. But if you bash your wife on 3 occasions and are charged you are right to play, or bash some dude in a roadrage outburst.

It's probably why they were shopping him.

Plenty of players punt on the NRL including their own games. They simply just get mates to put the bets on, exactly the same way jockeys get around it

I agree bashing women & road rage are bad & the perpetrators should be punished & they are by the courts.
Betting on something that you are a part of puts the integrity of the game in jeopardy which then could stop investors investing in the game. And if there is no investors there is no game as we know it.
So the NRL considers betting on games or matching fixing as the biggest no no.

I have always said that betting is the biggest single blight on the game.

I don't even bet on the Melbourne Cup ( only cause I learnt a lesson when I was young at the Dish lickers) but how is betting on yourself to win and issue doesn't everyone play to win?

Now if you bet on your self to lose then that is another story.

Yep, everyone does play to win but while there is a winner, there is always a loser and as players, I believe the opportunity to influence the outcome of a match for profiteering reason to be far to great and thus not getting involved in any way protects both the player and the integrity of the game.

I also believe that not only players are guilty of these sort of incidents. The officialdom of some games over the past 3 years has been extremely questionable where no logical explanation can be made except to wonder who bet on what?

I agee. It is discraceful how it is treated as something completely normal now. It is a real scourge on society.
