  • Matterson 2 year extension

The Sydney Roosters are pleased to announce the re-signing of up-and-coming backrower Ryan Matterson for a further two years, keeping him at the Club until at least the end of season 2019.

22 year-old Matterson expressed his delight at extending his contract with the Foundation Club, which comes just a week after he helped secure the Roosters maiden Auckland Nines title.

“I’m really proud to be a Rooster. Since day one, everyone at the Club has made me feel at home, and this is where I want to build a career,” said Matterson.

“I know that there’s still a lot of improvement in me, and I’m looking forward to continuing to learn from Robbo and the coaches, and hopefully secure my opportunity to play some good football for the Club,” he added.

Roosters Head Coach, Trent Robinson, was also pleased to have Matterson locked in to the Club’s long-term plans.

“Ryan’s energy and enthusiasm is contagious, and with his great work ethic, I have no doubt that he will only continue to grow over the coming seasons,” said Robinson.

“Away from football, Ryan is also a terrific person, so it’s great news for the Roosters to have secured his services for another couple of years,” he added.

Matterson made an impressive NRL debut in Round 8 of the 2016 season, with two try assists and one try of his own. He completed the season with 15 games under his belt and made his representative debut with the City Origin side.

The new agreement falls in line with the Club’s commitment to developing its youth and comes at an exciting time for the Roosters, with the Club also securing contract extensions with players including Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Dylan Napa, Sio Siua Taukeiaho, Joseph Manu and Connor Watson in the recent months.

Seems to me like a player of similar style and composure to Flannery. Could definitely be a handy player over the next few year.

That's awesome news. Looking at the squad last week I was thinking we were probably going to lose a couple of promising fringe first graders this year and Matterson is one who entered my mind as potentially being promised more game time elsewhere.

I'm really excited to see his development as a second rower this year, I'm a huge fan of the move.

Not sure about this guy. Plenty of skill, size and potential but at this stage in his career has a tonne of errors in him and is not even close to being able to control a game. Glad he has resigned but I would like to see him start showing a bit more than potential.

Of the 36 players on the home page player profile I would say Cordner, Aubusson, Guerra, Carter, Frei, Gray, Smith & Santi will all be vying for a back row position along with Matterson.
So if Cordner & Aubusson get the first shot at the back row spots & on the reserve bench the Roosters have 3 middle forwards & a utility where does he play?

Not many backrowers are required to control a game ... that's the halves job. I think Matto is definitely worth persevering with.

Good move. Looking forward to seeing him develop. Don't expect much game time for him too soon however. How will be great for filling some gaps but this move is about building a future.

This guy could be anything given the chance to settle into a permanent position.

In his defence he's only played about 15 first grade games so he rightfully deserves a fair bit of time before we judge him.

I reckon he could be a long term right 2nd row prospect. When I saw him at the trial he just about looked like our biggest player. He's also mobile and possesses ball skills and an offload.

Give Matto another year to develop and he could be a permanent fixture by 2018. The club obviously have high hopes for him.

Sorry mate I didn't realize he was now being considered as primarily a backrower. I thought of him as a half with a bit of utility potential.

Great news. Better to develop and invest in Matto and punt guerra

WTF man? Marto 2018? You have just made a fool of yourself bud.. I know Ryan personally and also know that he has dedicated this preseason to becoming a ball playing lock [under went a huge transformation both physically and mentally] , Robbo's preseason was dedicated to defence speed and fitness [to suit the shortened interchange] Robbo also decided early last year [After the Pearce thing] to fill the roster full off players that would be able to compete for positions.. Settle Tommy..

Seems promising MUW. Thanks for the insight.

Let's hope that Robbo has learned that competition for spots is healthy only if he backs that with tough decisions when needed.

The flip side is you can lose the team but sticking with players who don't deserve to hold spots.
