OK, I was desperate to watch some league and watched the match. Nine commentary kept referring to the Indigenous Team as the Indigenous "boys". The use of the word boys, when referring to race, is a very derogatory term (just ask Bert Newton) and , at best, patronising. Hard to watch with commentary on.

Missed the game. Any injuries? How did the arts play?

I don't have a problem with the word boys here in Australia. Everyone refers to players as boys. Just because you refer to aboriginal players or Fijian or Polynesian players as boys does not make it racist. In fact it is racist to not refer to certain subsets of players as boys based on their origin/heritage.

From a position of respect I would try not to refer to African Americans as boys because in their case it is disrespectful. Nearly as bad as the N word

The All Stars Team was not once referred to as boys so you work it out. I am from a European background so, it someone from a similar background calls me a wog, I have a laugh however if a non-wog calls me a wog that's a different story. Anyway to each their own but I found it in bad taste.

I think we can stop calling them All Stars too.
Really they were a team of semi-average first graders with the exception of 1 origin player (Cooper) and 1 top tier international (Friend) and some exciting young up and comers in Mitch Moses, Cartwright and Campbell-Gillard.

The commentators although idiots would never mean to insult these players.
Too much emphasis on political correctness these days.
              Lighten up.

I'm from north Italy... it's amazing how many people tell me I'm not Italian or that I don't look one bit Italian. Can't say anybody has ever called me a wog (for better or for worse).

Just interesting how wrong racial/cultural stereotypes always are.

My general rule is that I use language that I think is respectful towards everybody. I don't think using words that are racist per se is useful (even if used by the group - although I get that owning the words can be important). If somebody from a particular group complains about language then I'll change my ways regardless of how harmless something may seem.

In this case... is there a reference for this claim that calling members of a footy team who are indigenous 'boys' being racist? I suspect they like being considered 'the boys' because it means they are part of the team (calling footy players 'boys' is not uncommon). For example our indigenous boys are really talented and I'm glad we have them... would Watson, Fergo, Latrell, Smith...etc complain if I said that? I doubt it because the language is positive and respectful.

Americans? I don't care what they think about racism. They have one of the worst records regarding racism in the developed world and just elected Trump to 'build a wall'. They constantly whinge about 'illegal aliens' taking over their country, taking their jobs...etc but will then be the first people to scold others for their words.

Your suggestion for me to lighten up make me freakin' furious! lol. Seriously I could not agree more about political correctness going beyond crazy and I am glad to hear that nobody but me has an issue with this.

Although I am Euro background I grew up in a small NSW town in the 70's and saw the bigotry on a daily basis and am well aware of the language that was used hence, my feelings about this atm.

i agree to that completely. But why do they have to use a black jumper for the indigenous and a white one for all stars. a battle between black verse white. And the worst bit was at the end when the self proclaimed 'im the man' sook mundane appeared for nein. what a wanker he is.
