THE NRL career of rising star Willis Meehan appears over with Manly officials deciding to release the 21-year-old effective immediately from his two-year contract agreement.
Once compared to dual international Sonny Bill Williams, the hugely talented Meehan has chosen to return to the sport of boxing where he once pursued a Commonwealth Games berth.
On his second chance after being sacked by the Sydney Roosters in 2015, Meehan’s management have been in dialogue for several weeks with Manly officials about the young star’s focus on rugby league and his desire to continue boxing.

Meehan has played just one NRL match.
Despite investing the entire 2017 off-session into the talented prop-forward, Manly advised Meehan they would support whichever decision he made.
Having chosen boxing it’s almost certain, Meehan will be lost to rugby league.
