  • worst halves to win a comp.

Townsend with a nrl premiership, made me think who are the worst halves pairing you have seen win a comp?

Soward/hornsby and townsend/maloney are up there for mine. Although sherwin/anasta isn't much better.

    Reynolds and Keary.

Maloney has now won premierships with 2 different clubs, I don't think he deserves to be included in any 'worst of' category

Yeah, pull your head in Mijanja.

Maloney has definitely now moved into the upper echelon of halves in the game alongside Thurston & Cronk. I'm not kidding either, his influence on a team is just staggering when you think about his record.

The top 5 currently playing halves for mine are in this order - Thurston, Cronk, Maloney, Johnson, Milford.

As for the worst halves to win a comp? Hard to go past Soward/Hornby in recent memory.

Sherwin and Anasta don't deserve to be there.

Sherwin had probably the most deadly attacking kicking game I have seen.

He has become a byline but at the time he was very good - until he lost the plot big time.

Personally I think any team that wins the GF must have reasonably good halves that are in form.

There has been a few guys who didnt have the highest profiles in the NRL who played in the halves for the winning GF teams like
Mark Geyer at 5/8 in 1999 with Melbourne, Kimmorley was half.
Sean Rudder at 5/8 for Newcastle in 2001, Johns was half.
Shane Perry at 1/2 for Brisbane in 2006, Lockyer at 5/8

I'm with Headless Chook and Steak face. Maloney is a winner. Simple as that. So I don't know how you can include him with any combo.

                Johnson is staggeringly overrated.

He has huge potential but what has he achieved in the last 5 years? He choked at seasons end again this year.

No surprise he played his best footy alongaide Jimmy, even though it was before his prime. Because he needs a good half beside him.

I'd rate Pearce ahead of him atm.

Sorry, maloney is the consequences of townsend, I'm not singling out halves, im putting them as a combo. Maloney is great, but which club would honestly pin their hopes on townsend alone? Should of made that clearer.

But the Sharks didn't pin their hopes on him alone, they coupled him with an experienced partner who is a winner and they reaped the rewards

Surely Kimmorley and Matt Geyer get a mention here

Attacking a combo don't mean you're having a go at an individual player.
I once thought no team could ever win a comp with Preston Campbell in the halves because his woeful defence and AWOL moments wouldn't cut it in pressure games.

I'll go with that as well.
                          "The flat attack" lol.
Half the refs were too scared to penalise Melbourne at all that year, but the end result was a lot better than stain merge winning.

As they say, Winners are grinners... Whos to say what impact Maloney with Hastings could have had had he been kept. Is hastings better than townsend? Well at least the records will say that Townsend has won a comp...meanwhile we cam second last with Pearce. Plus, Maloney now an International....Go figure!

Its funny Shane Perry always gets a mention I remember watching him play the year before in a Qld Cup game at Burleigh in a loding team when I lived up there and commenting to my mate Whats this guy doing playing here he is s class above anyone else on the field he just has so much time when he has the ball I think he is NRL standard Another maligned halfback who didnt win a comp but has played in a GF had the same qualities watching him play for Wentworthville against Newtown in 2008 GF that was Geoff Robson The point im amaking is those maligned halves who play 1st grade are well above anyone playing a bit lower
