  • Youtube video of highlights of the 1972 Grandfinal

    Its actually the 1974 GF

Before my time but this was the first premiership for a long time.

It is the last 15 or so minutes of the game and starts a few minutes before the Mark Harris try.

I actually loaded a 1972 GF highlights video but it was focused completely on Manly so I took it down.

    Cheers
    PD

The video of the 72 gf - what a stitch up of a game by ref Keith Page. Today's ref Cummins is the equivalent of Page.
This game was Manlys first GF win and their boss Arthurson who was also head of the then ARL very influential to say the least. The commentary ultra conservative as evident of the so called Freddy Jones try. I know some Easts players who played in this game and they confirmed ref Page made it easy for Manly its securing its first GF win. I recall one Easts vs Manly match of the day at the SCG ( not 72 ) when Page sent off 3 Easts players one being of all people Johnny Peard

Arthurson wasn't running the ARL at that time. He was running Manly, he didn't take on the ARL gig until after Kevin Humphries got in trouble with the Four Corners expose in the eraly 80's

Thanks headless for the correction on the shonk Arko - needless to say he still wieldered enormous influence at the time both in Australia and England. As for Page he and Cummins the most one eyed refs I have seen to date.

I don't think he was as influential as you think back in those times. It was just a rubbish performance by the ref at the time.

Remember the Manly game at Brooky when the officiating was so poor Gus tried to get our players to walk off in protest? But our Captain refused. Can't remember who it was.
I think we had a big lead and were getting run down. Maybe had a player sent off. I think we won in the end.

Yeah that's right Arko had no influence at that time at all

*Freddy Jones bouncing ball (even the bunker today would've picked that one up), you could see John Ballesty throwing the ball in disgust at that crook Page's decision to award the try.
*Blatant forward pass from Eadie in the lead up to the Branighan try.
*Disallowed a Rooster try for being a double movment ..50-50 at best but more of a try than the two above he gave Manly.

1972 Grand Final -- Biggest 'big game' hatchet job from a ref in RL history.
I can remember an interview with Artie years later, where he refers to this game as being 'robbery'.

When SKD scored in the 2013 GF v Manly, off a Jimmy forward pass to Mini ... I said it might have taken 40 years, but we just got one back !

That's my re-collection too. Ends up an old friend of ours was Keith Page's brother in law and he was a Canterbury man. I remember the day he sent those three off, Peardy went and sat in the Grand Stand. His sister, who is married to Peter Moscatt, was very upset in the footage... which if you've ever met her is very hard to imagine. The knock on and forward pass were a disgrace in the 72 GF... classic Keith Page. We always felt like we were going to get reamed under him.

Ive seen the game a few times in its entirity......we did cop a raw deal from the ref that day .
I did ask a certain person about it connected to the game ..he said what you all probably think .

John, I was at that game. It was the days when we had pommy Phil Clarke in the team I seem to recall. My memory is a little bit hazy but I think it was Ricketerson who was sent off and Sean Garlick may have been the skipper.

Digger Moscatt never got a look in with the powers that be with picking rep sides however he was highly thought of by front rower team mates Artie, Jim Morgan and Ian Boffa Baker.

I was at the game, don't remember any one getting sent off, maybe someone was sin binned but don't remember that either, I do remember East leading 19-4 then Manly got a string of penalties in a row, it was 7 in a row including 2 scrum penalties, Easts started to wilt with all the ball that Manly had, Manly got it back 19-16 and that's when Gould wanted the players to come off but the skipper refused, I think Garlick was the skipper that day. East held on an got a penalty late to put the score out to 21-16. The other things I remember about the game was when we were up 19-4 Andrew Walker threw a pass out to an unmarked Tony Iro who was standing out on the wing, the pass was just too high and went through Iro's finger tips, he would have scored in the corner to make it 23 or 25-4 and we probably wouldn't have had all the drama that unfolded later in the game, also I remember Jason Hudson playing at fullback for us, he had a mighty game for us holding Manly at bay.
