  • Matterson

Hey guys i'm a supporter of another club but I like to come on here every so often for discussion. No malice involved.

Anyway, the topic I wanted to talk about was Ryan Matterson. Where does he belong in the team for next year?

Having been chopped around from 5/8 to centre to backrow, I really think he has what it takes to make a good wide running playmaking second rower.

With the likes of Cordner, Aubusson, Guerra and SST to compete with, it could be hard but I think Robbo should start him there for Round 1 should he perform well in the off season.

I would like to see Robbo have him in the squad at the expense of Guerra but that probably won't happen.

My starting backrow would be Maubs, Liu and Cordner assuming SST is out or at best returns but would do so off the bench with Matto.

Nat Butcher will surely come into calculations for next year as well.

Sproose Moose if Cordner, Guerra, Maubs, SKD, Copley, Fergusson, Manu & Keary are all fit he will continue to play off the bench or for Wyong.
      Who's your team Sproose Moose?

Watching him last night he seems the most effective at centre atm.
But long term he'll probably suit the backrow.

          He looked vulnerable in defence
I like the idea of developing him into an edge payer
Cords on one side, Matto the other and SST in the middle. Aubs off the bench with Butcher pressing for a bench spot while killing it at Wyong.
I can't see us re-signing Guerra so hopefully he performs next year to gain a contract else where.
I still think we are short a front rower. JWH and Nappa are starting but Evans worries me. Moa is getting on in age so we need a big fella. That's a priority I think

Left centre i think he has the ball playing skills to put Tupou last really seen when Jennings was inside him. Seems a coachable young man with plenty of talent. No one goes close to Boyd Cordner on the left-hand side in our club or the comp so no option there at this stage for the young man who needs to be out there playing plenty of football.

I would love another player similar to boyd. Jackson or gillette would be fantastic. We could sell guerra, matterson and toops/copley. Either of those two would more than make up for those 3.

Did you see his lazy effort in defence last night? I dont think he'll amount to much tbh. Bit too laxadaisy in everything he does and has zero creativity.

I like the look of that Butcher kid though. He never gives up - effort was outstanding for someone on debut. Didnt stop during his whole stints.

They are the dudes you wanna keep. Not the lazy shits like Matterson and Topou.

Matterson to me seems to have his head in the clouds after the anzac game and city country. Has been terrible afterwards. Doesnt want to do the hard yards.

Im going to reserve judgement until I see him play consistently in his correct position of backrow.

I wish Butcher had a bit more size to him. He isn't very intimidating.
As for Matto, I think some on here are judging him on his size rather than his playing ability.

Matterson... Ive been critical of his performances , some have been woeful e.g. the latest game vs Broncos he gave up possession a couple of times trying to push an offload , terrible defence at times.
He has potential , he needs a good coach.

With reducing interchanges Matto should end up being an old school ball playing lock....

Reminds me of a young Cordner. He was exactly the same size and body shape.

They dont all need to be 6 foot. I know Robbo likes a variety of shapes and sizes in his pack.

Butcher will be great off the bench next year..

He is 18 man and still growing.

He won't end up the biggest but the dude has a massive motor for his age and the potential to be the closest we have to Cordner.
