  • 2016 - Provide your View

Its over - 15th, thank god for Newcastle is what I say....

Interested in your view of the season. Underachieving, unlucky, rebuilding, poorly coached, lacking quality, acceptable, poor recruitment/retention....Which is it?

I'm disappointed we come 15th but extremely proud in the resolve. They didn't blame the injuries, pearces stuff up and recruitment. If they come 15th and didn't gain some positives from the season, than our season is a waste. Having Watson, Manu and Matterson putting some runs on the board leading into the future is more of a gain than coming 5 and losing 2 straight final games. The future is bright and we've just come off three minor premierships!!

I've had my rant in previous posts about this season. It's done and dusted. Where are they drinking tomorrow?

A big steaming turd of a year started with live dog sex and ending with long term injuries.

Coach Robinson exposed as a Joe Torre with a star-studded 1998 Yankees like coach.

One thing that happened, I became much more interested in the AFL than I have been for a while.

The question isn't what has happened in the last 3 years..it is what is the view of this season. Not asking you to agree or disagree, just after an honest view of this year. I obviously have an opinion and interested in others.
As I said is this year any of the above phrases I used in the opening and had I said in February to you all we will finish 15th would that have been an acceptable outlook for the year?

Johnny without being too obvious my opinion of the year probably sits in the same spot yours does...but I'm sure there will be plenty with a positive spin. Thats why I ask had I said if I told you in Feb we would finish 15th would you have seen that as an acceptable outlook?

We were always going to struggle with JWH, Cordner, Pearce and SKD out for long stints plus 11 debutants.
Taking the positives out of the year, Mitchell, Manu, Watson and Matterson gained some great experience and showed they are up to NRL standard. Butcher also impressed me tonight.
They will all improve for next year and Keary is a good pickup. I hope Flash will be good for us but I'm not convinced.

Barring injuries I think we are a 5-8 team next season. I hope they all behave in the off season.

If you are a woman, I would have disagreed with my hands in my pockets. If you're a dude, I would have slapped the taste out of your mouth.

Our recruitment and retention was terrible. If we had kept Maloney we would have been in the 8. This was exacerbated by the injuries to JWH and Cords and the puppy incident. In short, we backed the wrong horse (Hastings) and that has bitten us badly

Once Ian Henderson got injured & Joe Burgess was punted after the first game the season was over.

I think retention/recruitment was definitely part of the problem. However coaching cannot be ignored. Like tonight and last week, think of how many other times we led a team reasonably well only to get beat? In years gone by you were always confident when we were in front however this year didn't matter if we were in front by 6, 12 or 18 I always had the feeling we would still find a way to get beat and more often than not we did...

                        Lacklustre...
                        1. Too many injuries
                        2. Too many stars punted
                        3. Gambles with recruitment and retention didn't pay immediate dividends
                        4. Pearce
                        5. The Hastings saga... clearly stuff we don't know there but left us with no kickers in tight losses
                        6. POS stood down... great, more drama
                        7. What can only be described as rotten luck in every aspect of the game/management

                        Positives
                        - None really. We were $hit and the Knights were beyond $hit. This isn't something we should be proud of. If anything we should thank the knights because we deserve the spoon. They got farked bu Wayne and Tinkler so had nothing to play with. Even with injuries, we had a combination of rep players + the best rated kids in the NRL and still flooped. This was our own stupid fault...
                        - The only minor positives relate to potential and what coulda been. I'm embarrassed that kids like Latrell, Manu, Watson and Nikorima came to us because we officially farked up their introduction to the NRL. 2016 Was seriously disgraceful (with the odd bit of individual brilliance). As a fan I still love the boys and the club, but I'm really sorry to all the kids who chose us over other clubs because they deserve better. We're lucky if any of them come back in 2017!

                          Yes especially Maloney.
Injuries & being very unlucky in about 5 games played a big part as well.

poor recruitment, the maloney hastings debacle was just that, pearce played up, cords jwh injured, to many youngsters, first 2 months we were diabolical, 15 is unacceptable in my book after having won 3 mps in the previous years, anything below 12th was unacceptable really, glad its over.

the maloney hastings debacle is enough reason to give pos the boot?
im glad thats over beinteresting to see whos in the train on squad, i really think it would be smart to have pearce as back up hooker and half? for the aussie side?
