  • Dale Copely

I know right now it is really easy to point fingers for us fans who sit behind a keyboard and a TV and we would all be singing praises and change our tunes if we were winning but.....

There are some players in this team that are so called established first graders that making school boy errors. Not once or twice, but nearly every game and about 3 to 4 times a game.

As much as the fingers have been pointed at the likes of Guerra, Ferguson and Friend as some of those that have had a bad season, one player whom I never understood why we signed him in the first place and he has done nothing to convince me otherwise since is DALE COPELY.

The bloke is completely lost in defence. He has no idea where his winger is, or where his inside defender is. No communication.

Now it is easy to blame a young player playing inside Copely, such as Watson last night. But if you watch all the tries we conceded on Copely's side last night, nearly every one of them is due to Copely's fault. He is a so-called established first grade footballer. If Watson is not communicating, Copely is experienced enough to let Watson know what he needs to do.

But Copely has been found out rushing in and tackling no one numerous times. The excuse of being a new player at the club does not fly with me, when you consider how often players change teams these days and adjust quickly.

Once again our recruitment for 2016 leaves so much to be desired and you wonder what the likes of POS and Robbo were thinking. In one of the other threads, one of the posters mentioned how Michael Gordon and Ashley Taylor were just sitting there with no offers till late in the year. Given Ashley Taylor was a unknown commodity, you wonder what the club was thinking when they did not go in for Michael Gordon, who would have replaced Maloney with the goal-kicking and helped replace RTS at fullback.

Another player that baffles me was Ian Henderson!

Then in another surprising move, when James Roberts contract bungle happened at the Titans, I wonder what POS and Robbo were doing if they knew the whole time that they were looking to let Jennings leave. At that point, why not go after a player like Roberts who has speed to burn and even at that time is a better player than Copely. Now thanks to them we are effectively stuck with Copely's contract for the next year or 2.

To me, there are only seems 1 legitimate reason - that being the success of the 2013-2015 started to make the likes of POS and Robbo feel comfortable. Started to let them think that they could sign any player they wanted and they would look good playing in the Roosters structure however bad they were at their clubs. They started to think they had found the key to Bellamy and Melbourne's success. How wrong they were! We can only hope they have now learnt their lesson and the recruitment in the coming years improve because even though Robbo has recently signed on till 2019, I am not sure how long more he will last if he continues to sign players like Copely & Henderson again.

The way you describe how Copely defends, you could transpose Fergusons name to describe what's happening most games on the other side of the field.
You have to wonder what goes on at training ?

I get what you mean with his lack of communication last night, for example, when watson was sliding out (which was the correct option), meanwhile Copley was coming in to make the tackle. If he didn't get in the road, and didn't commit to that tackle and slid like Connor did, it would've been obstruction, and no try. But instead it was given a try because he made a defensive play, and the sharks player didn't impede Connor, it was Copley.

But Copley actually played a decent game last night, his best for the roosters so far by far

I would've preferred Brendon Elliott to stay than sign Copley

Ive been patient with Copley but am beginning to think he is to bis e defensive liability The last few rounds I think will kake or break him for next year If he deosnt sort his defence out he will be at Wyong starting next season

I'm sure Copely played wing instead of centre for the Broncos and when watching him play there he looked big and powerful. Now playing in the centres he has no idea in defence and looks so small. In saying that all our backs look small compared to other clubs and we get hammered in every set of 6, look at Fergo he looks sick he has lost that much weight. Maybe our training need to be looked at

There is nothing wrong with his tackling technique. In fact he is one of the better tacklers in the backs.

It's reading in defence where he and most others are hopeless.

I can't understand how these players struggle with simple reading in defence. They are first graders after all, it's their job!

Reading the defence is 99% if tackling. Any 6ft4 100kg fridge can hit with the shoulder. Centre requires too much brain power for our side atm.

Did you see Gallen wind up and run full bore at Cordner only to get smashed and be put on his ar*se.

                      Now that's how you tackle!

He especially looked terrible in defence when they were down to 12 men but I thought he looked alright in attack probably his best game thus far.

It is more than misreading defence. Copley too slow to turn and chase. Too easy for someone like Barba to create an overlap with an in-and-away.

Copley is a Winger, just like Fergo and SKD.. On SKD, am I the only person who think he has been largely terrible since the opening rounds of the season?

No, definitely not. Still can't catch, can't pass, loses the ball, runs obstruction lines in attack.
If you're a centre and you can't do something like draw and pass to your winger you simply shouldn't be in 1st grade in that position.
