  • Religion and not playing on Sundays

I'm interested to hear what people think about this. As we all know Will Hopoate has been given permission to not play on Sundays. His teammate Sam Perrett is of the same Mormon faith and he has been refused the same consideration. Now I'm no lawyer but if I was Perrett I would think I may have a case of workplace discrimination.

Personally, my opinion of Hopoate is that he is a freak and not the good kind. Since he came back from his mission he has not been close to the same player.

Does he not understand that sport is entertainment? Most people work from Monday to Friday and that is the reason that the majority of sport is played on the weekends. It allows people to enjoy this entertainment at times when they are not confined to their workplaces. It is kind of the reason why NRL exists at all. People pay to be entertained by it in their free time. I believe Hopoate should be given no consideration whatsoever and that if he does not like it he should retire and do something else with his life.

But what does this mean for other people? What if SBW said he would not play on Fridays anymore? Friday is the day when most Muslims attend their Mosque. Saturday is the day for Jews. What if I celebrate Festivus on a Wednesday? Can I skip training (work)? What if I am just a regular nutcase Christian and I also want to go to Church on a Sunday? Why is the Mormon allowed to do as he wants and other Christians would not dream of asking for such a ridiculous entitlement. How does it effect the salary cap? Imagine we are about to play a Grand Final qualifier and some of our best players want to sit out the game for religious reasons. Great for them but we need to select some reserve graders now for the most important game of the year.

I think it is absolutely ludicrous to grant an NRL player this right and will lead to a great number of problems in the future. My real question is why is this Mormon Will Hopoate so special? What make him so unique that he is the only player in the NRL granted this privilege? Why is he so pure when he comes from a family of criminal deadbeats?

I hope the Roosters never entertain such garbage.

This could be something Pearcey could try to skip Origin.

I don't agree with the Hopoate stance. If I were Hasler I would be telling Hopoate that if you can't play on Sundays, and can't play on grand final day, then you are no more than a fill-in player worth a fraction of your sign-on fee.

I would not want a player who was not committed to play every game possible.

I read that Perrett recently asked for Sunday games off too as he is also Mormon. His request was rejected.

Hoppa is a fruit loop. Perrett is a fruit loop.

Let's not sugar coat this with politcal correctness.

Any player who doesn't want to play on Sundays, or any other day, due to religous reasons is a ****ing fruit loop.

And i too hope that our club never entertains such craziness.

As far as I know didn't he play on Sunday's with parramatta for the last 2 years, so why change now. Maybe the 800k a yr parramatta were paying was enough for him to conveniently suspend the Sunday moron rule.

Well Dazza, If the Dogs were dumb enough to allow that clause to be part of Hoppa's contract then so be it. ..

No problems with Hoppa not playing Sundays as it's in his contract. I'm not religious at all but if that's the path he has chosen good luck to him, he was smart enough to get it in his contract.Considering his father is a complete ****wit, the kid seems to have turned out to be a well mannered and considerate human being. His faith seems to have made him an impressive young man so good luck to him. Would you rather him play Sundays but carry on like a Pearce or Carney etc?? I do think the club had a right to deny Perrett though, not sure he ever completed his mission? ?

Perrett has no legal or moral grounds. Hopoate worked it into his contract when he signed with the Dogs and was upfront about it. I'm sure it had a significant affect on Hopoate's remuneration package.

I agree with most that I wouldn't be signing a player who can't play on Sunday's but if players can come to a mutual agreement and work it into their contracts then good luck to them.

If the Bulldogs make the Grand Final and Hopoate is in form there are going to be a lot of upset people.

Contracting working conditions into a person's contract that are in one person's favour and discriminate against another is surely illegal. Any legal experts here? (and I don't mind you Tobin****wit).
