I'm interested to hear what people think about this. As we all know Will Hopoate has been given permission to not play on Sundays. His teammate Sam Perrett is of the same Mormon faith and he has been refused the same consideration. Now I'm no lawyer but if I was Perrett I would think I may have a case of workplace discrimination.
Personally, my opinion of Hopoate is that he is a freak and not the good kind. Since he came back from his mission he has not been close to the same player.
Does he not understand that sport is entertainment? Most people work from Monday to Friday and that is the reason that the majority of sport is played on the weekends. It allows people to enjoy this entertainment at times when they are not confined to their workplaces. It is kind of the reason why NRL exists at all. People pay to be entertained by it in their free time. I believe Hopoate should be given no consideration whatsoever and that if he does not like it he should retire and do something else with his life.
But what does this mean for other people? What if SBW said he would not play on Fridays anymore? Friday is the day when most Muslims attend their Mosque. Saturday is the day for Jews. What if I celebrate Festivus on a Wednesday? Can I skip training (work)? What if I am just a regular nutcase Christian and I also want to go to Church on a Sunday? Why is the Mormon allowed to do as he wants and other Christians would not dream of asking for such a ridiculous entitlement. How does it effect the salary cap? Imagine we are about to play a Grand Final qualifier and some of our best players want to sit out the game for religious reasons. Great for them but we need to select some reserve graders now for the most important game of the year.
I think it is absolutely ludicrous to grant an NRL player this right and will lead to a great number of problems in the future. My real question is why is this Mormon Will Hopoate so special? What make him so unique that he is the only player in the NRL granted this privilege? Why is he so pure when he comes from a family of criminal deadbeats?
I hope the Roosters never entertain such garbage.
