  • Big picture Rd3

A thread for the realists who aren't overly surprised by the results/performances and want to rationally discuss the game.

    A few points;

    - Latrell Mitchell continues to surprise me, we all knew he had talent but for an 18 year old kid he's more than holding his own. His workrate in attack has been really impressive, whilst Sheck was all about yardage and he was exceptional the one criticism of him was that he never had the energy to be the attacking weapon he probably should've been for us in attacking positions. Latrell Mitchell seems to be the opposite, it's all about conserving energy for big plays and letting his wingers do the grunt work. He hasn't been perfect, he's made a few costly errors but overall for an 18 year old I'm excited and a little surprised.

    - Dale Copley's injury opens an interesting door, the three options are to bring Burgess in and shift SKD to centre, bring Elliott in directly to centre or give Joey Manu ago. As much as I'd love to see Joey Manu get a go maybe now is not the right time.

    - Jackson Hastings is stagnating a bit in his development, I'd like to see him start to show some progression of the lessons he's learnt in the first few games.

    - Mitch Frei looked promising, a fundamental error which cost us but he looked extremely mobile, made decent yards and worked his ass off in defence.

    - Sam Moa is back to his 2013 form, extremely promising stuff.

I feel like the key will be keeping this group as mentally fresh as possible, there's no point beating them up every week only for JWH, Cordner & Pearce to return to a team with no confidence and morale. A win soon is a must, tonight was a poor result for a number of reasons.

Totally agree with all your points R6.
-Mitchell looks like a freak, confident player and will be a star!
-SKD to the centres with Burgess to the wing seems like the seamless option.
-Hastings needs to start running more,he seems very timid and pass happy
    -Frei impressed
    -Moa and SST look great

I didn't like hearing that robbo chooses his fullback on a week to week basis (between fergo/mitchell).

One or the other, surely, then you can pick the rest of your backline accordingly. And unfortunately hendo/friend on the park at the same time, has been taken out of his hands.

The team may not be playing well, but robbo seems to be making some very odd decisions also.

Mitchell has that real explosiveness about him. As for Hastings, I think the criticism has been unfair. Nikorima is the one who isn't quite ready to start and that's putting pressure on him. Judgement for Hastings should be reserved once cordner, jwh and Pearce are back. Frei is a big body and should be persisted with. Undecided about burgess or Elliot to come into the team. Atm burgess experience would probably be valued higher I'd imagine. The Jake friend situation is what concerns me most.

I'm not necessarily criticising Hastings, just an observation.

The one advantage of not having Pearce there at the moment is Hastings has been thrown in the deep end and he'll learn a lot from it very quickly. I think we're potentially a stronger side come the back end of the season for Hastings having had the experience that he otherwise wouldn't have had if Pearce remained in the side from Round 1 and Hastings resumed the limited role he had back end of 2015. Hopefully he just starts to show a few of those signs of progression.

Hastings is light years ahead of Nikorima at the moment in their respective development paths. Criticism on Nikorima would be harsh too, he's tried his guts out and has undoubted talent just a long way off being a first-grade half and still figuring out the Roosters style and combos.

Losing cordner and Pearce so close to kick off has had big ramifications as to a reshuffling of youngsters in this side.

Jayden was just supposed to be coping with approximately 25 mins of 1st grade off the bench.

Thus affecting both friend and Hastings.

That off season was a bad ripple effect still reverberating through the team.

Saw some good stuff tho, so proud of SKD and tallyho could be anything, love his bump offs.
