The mainstream news on Channels 7, 9 and 10 is putrid in the modern era, absolutely putrid. Glorified infotainment for bogans, understaffed news resources, fashion models instead of journalists, paid-for advertorials disguised as news and current affairs - it's all there and more.

To watch them clambour for the moral high ground on the Pearce story has me laughing my head off, considering THEIR industry is absolutely rife with alcoholics and drug users.

And this is the same 'news' organisation that this week ran a paid for advert for the launch of US owned Carl Jr restaurants as one of their LEAD STORIES!

Think about it - when is the last time you saw a hard hitting political interview on 7, 9 or 10? The closest you would probably get is Andrew Bolt on Sunday morning for crying out loud. The ABC are the only outlet that do them anymore. The only snippets of real news they have that are worth watching is purchased and re-broadcast from companies such as the Associated Press, Reuters, CNBC etc.

The rest of it is complete and utter putrid shite, and I am so disappointed that otherwise smart people get wound up in this kind of sensationalism.

The people in charge at these networks are scummy bottom feeders of the highest order.

This is where the AFL wins hands down.
The media in Melbourne actually aim to support their game.
The media in Sydney aim to drag the NRL down.

The ARL apparently has a whole department that looks after media and helps control what goes out into the mainstream.
The NRL just take bucket loads of cash and give to Grant, Richarson etc

The media is also not responsible for their actions and are there is no accountability and that is pathetic

My thoughts exactly. Very well said. Journalistic skill and integrity is at an all time low. Where will we be when the likes of Laurie Oakes retire? None of which excuses Mitchell Pearce for his behaviour or the damage it has done to our club's reputation, by the way.

That must make it an an incredible low, its never been a profession of integrity, sure writting skills exist, but integrity and truth are 2 words that have always been irrelevant to journalism.
Where will we be when Laurie Oakes retires, rejoicing , he is nothing more than a disgrace, feeding off the lowest of the lowest politicians, everything he has written in the last 9 years has been nothing more than an endevour to get into Kevin Rudd's pants.

i have basically watched no tv in australia for 5 years. i had seen glimpses of 7 9 10 news over the time but not planned viewing. i refuse to watch 9 footy commentary with audio. its tabloid commentary.our ex board member did pearce no favours - they lynched him at the soo time. as for 7's Josh Masoud a ex news journo is a gutter journo. Interesting watching after games press conferences where Robbo treats him with polite contempt. brilliant.

Mate post of the year! Very well articulated and I agree whole heartedly. To add to your tirade, the only print medium one can read without breaking out into fits of laughter is The Australian, the rest are tabloid trash.

You blame the media however you only need to look at the putrid responses to this whole saga by our own fans to realize exactly why the media are the way they are.

mate, before any of us knew what happened, the way ACA handled the situation was very very poor. Like i said the feeling and the context of the discussion honestly felt like Mitch killed someone.

Put into perspective, this whole thing with Mitch pails into a minor road bump compared to the Walker and Gray incident. Yet that's been forgotten.

I dunno man. I take your point, i.e. Walker and Grey unquestionably od'd on painkillers as a result of imbibing for fun, and as such you can say that it was "worse", but in my opinion those guys are far more deserving of sympathy than Pearce.

That is to say that I believe Walker and Gray were victims, where Pearce was the antagonist. Hear me out:

Walker (definitely) and Gray (probably) were playing first grade league with injuries serious-enough to require surgery. Playing needled-up week-in-and-out, and bearing the consequences thereafter, for the "greater good" (or What Will Placate The Rugby League Beast, if you prefer).

The fact that these young eejits got high and abused their prescription meds is unsurprising given their age and the circumstances. I mean, I was (and most others were) experimenting with drugs at the same stage of life, and I wasn't pressured into playing a hardcore contact sport while injured, either. These guys were being selfish, sure, but not as selfish as was the rl machine that they're part of.

Pearce on the other and was in no position whereby he had a decent reason to get high(er) than anyone else, nor lead other impressionable idiots on a merry dance.

Sure, he's a deeply flawed person (who isn't) and that's not in itself a bad thing, but it's his utter crappness that grates. He's a good footballer, but a crap person. Not 'shit', not 'evil' and not 'bad'. Just crap.

When you get journo's saying Pearce should be sacked because how offensive the video was.. Then hours later happy to re-tweet photoshoped picture on Pearce on the field passing a dog replacing a ball
                            thinking it was funny...

Other than some fan's being a bit tounge in cheek as far as the poodle is concerned, what "Putrid" responses are you taking about, some are supporting him whilst other just want him gone. Considering the circumstances and his past history I would say these would be normal responses.

The only online newspaper I read is the New York Times and the only news I watch is whatever snippets I pick up from SBS before and after Poh's Kitchen every weeknight. The bogan media is everywhere now but if you choose carefully, you can avoid it but still remain well informed on issues that matter.
