  • Robinson and Roosters chasing NRL History

THREE years ago Trent Robinson arrived at the Sydney Roosters as a relative unknown. Today the 38-year-old is chasing NRL coaching history.
After winning a title in his rookie year, Robinson can wrap up consecutive minor premierships with a win over South Sydney on Friday night.
That would make it 12 straight victories for the competition favourites heading into the finals, the club’s best winning run since they won 19 straight under the great Jack Gibson in 1975.
And after that, Robinson and the Roosters will then have the chance to do what no coach or no team has done before.
Fox Sports Stats show that in records dating back to when compulsory grand finals started in 1954, the longest streak to a grand final win was 11 straight.
That was done by Souths (1955) and Manly (1972).
For the Roosters to go unbeaten for the rest of the season, they would require 15 straight wins.
    A rugby league record.
    Can it be done?
On Monday, the TAB offered up $4.75 odds that the Roosters can go unbeaten to claim the title.
“The Roosters are easily the best-backed team to win the premiership and it’s hard to see who will beat them,” TAB’s Matt Jenkins said.
As it stands, they are $1.35 favourites to beat the Rabbitohs on Friday night and $3.50 favourites to win the premiership. And while everyone always talks about their quality roster, the players believe the coach deserves much of the credit for the “culture change” at Bondi.
Asked on Monday what it was that makes Robinson the coach he is, Blake Ferguson explained: “He is a people’s person.
“He knows how to get the best out of you.
“He treats you with respect. He treats you like a man.
    “He is not two faced.
“He just tells you straight down the line. You know where he is coming from.”
Michael Jennings says the secret to Robinson is not just his football knowledge, but his ability to understand individuals.
“For me personally, he is really balanced,” Jennings said.
“He is really good at what he does and he is really balanced, as in giving leeway with players and understanding players.”
Whatever he is doing is certainly working because even without Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Mitchell Pearce in recent weeks the Roosters haven’t missed a beat.
There last loss was against the Sharks way back in round 13, and this season they are yet to lose by double digits.
“I have never played in a team like this,” Ferguson added.
“I have played in some really exciting teams attacking wise but not defensively.
“Our defence is second to none. And why it is so good is because everyone works for each other and everyone respects each other.”
Which is obviously passed down from the coach, who has won an incredible 55 from 77 games for a strike rate of 71.4 per cent.
“He came three years ago and from day one what he wanted is what he is getting,” Jennings said.
    “He changed everything.
“To be a part of that (culture change) has just been amazing.
“What he has done at the club, there is no words for it.”

Wow. It's great that the two most (previously) troubled players within our team are speaking so highly of the coach.

I think RTS will discover how good a coach Robbo is once he is over at the shambles they call the NZ Warriors.

They also fail to mention the impact when Robbo left as assistant coach for Catalan.

I am sure Roger will be ok at night when he sleeps on a bed of NZDs. Do you really see him cutting his contract short because of how he is coached?

Brilliant article. There is no reason why, next year being his forth year, Robbo cannot or should not be our coach for a decade - he is contracted until 2017.

Not unless Brian Houston tells him to.

Actually, get that bloke on the phone. That's one thing we haven't tried.

You never know. $800k a year is great inless it means you're over-rated, resented by the club and your next contract is expected to be minimal based on form.

RTS will do alright I'm sure. However, will he run 250+ metres a game without Robbo and the boys? I don't know.

If their tactic becomes 'THROW HOSPITAL PASSES TO RTS AND EXPECT HIM TO CHEW UP METRES ALL THE TIME' then he could turn into a James Tedesco and end up injured all season. If injury stunts his career, slows him down and leads to uncertainty then who knows?

Not saying this will happen, but the biggest money isn't always the wisest option.

                    Hi BUDDY,

It is often forgotten by the media that Trent "Robbo" Robinson was the assistant coach and rumoured to be the man in charge during season 2010 which lead to us making the grand final. It appeared to all fall apart in his absence on and off the field. I believe the greatest testament to how well Mr Robinson has performed is in the newspapers after Brian "Smithy" Smith was sacked there was no mention anywhere of Robinson's name in the candidate list of coaches to replace Smith which was accompanied by betting odds. His appointment took everybody by surprise that was not associated with the club however I do recall there were fans of this website hoping that he would be appointed.

When the odds for our next coach came out with Sportsbet they had about 15 coaches listed but not Robbo.
I called them and told them to add Robbo and they put him up at $17. I quickly put $50 on but they wouldn't accept it and only took $20. I had one other bet and that was Bellyache to take out $500 and that was no problem. After my bet on Robbo they took the market down. Farken bookies know what goes on and and rorted the public for a few days.

RTS will succeed anywhere he goes. The same as JT would. Lots of comments suggesting he will struggle. With mautalino, mannering, Johnson, Luke and an emerging lolohea they are far from a one man side. The team they have on the field at the moment does not reflect the quality of their 25 man roster.

At least it's not as obscure as those cricket records that they always pull out during the dull parts...

Eah he's the first bowler to hit 10 runs before lunch on day 1 of an international test against England held at some obscure oval while some random duke has been watching on the day after the birth of his 4th son who has blonde hair and...etc

Off-topic but some of those cricket 'records' really shyte me.
