  • Interesting article by Gus on the premiership race

Gus reckons that the top 3 - Broncos, Cowboys and us - are the only teams with a genuine chance at winning the comp. He went through his opinions on each team, below is what he said about us:

    ROOSTERS:
On paper the Roosters have the best roster in the NRL. The addition of a player such as Blake Ferguson to an already star-studded line-up had given this team a new X-factor when it comes to winning big matches.
The improvement of fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck since his full-time switch to replace Anthony Minichiello has also been a huge boost for the tricolours. The thing about the Roosters is I don't think we have seen them at their best. They show glimpses from time to time. But they are not always playing with the intensity or level of excellence I anticipate.
Or maybe it's an illusion. Maybe we look at the names and expect more, but in reality they are flat out. Maybe this is as good as it gets. But I don't think so.
The Roosters are capable of far better and have a higher level of performance they can reach that will be beyond the capabilities of the other contenders.
The Roosters have the best defensive record in the NRL. Historically, the best defensive teams usually win the title. In 18 matches this season, they have conceded only 212 points. That's less that two converted tries a game. Amazing. Your attack is not under any real pressure when you are only chasing 12 points a game.
The Roosters first 13 boasts representative-class players in every position. But it is the strength of their bench that gives them the biggest advantage over their rivals.
Regardless of how Trent Robinson names his 17 each week, he can always rely on tremendous impact from his bench. He also has great versatility in his players, which covers all possible scenarios when injuries or setbacks occur.
Their pack can dominate the advantage line like no other in the competition. They are also becoming more adept at passing the football among each other, which adds impetus to their go-forward game.
This allows halfback Mitchell Pearce more time and space to kick and pass. They are now getting early ball to the strike centres Ferguson and Michael Jennings, which is putting immense pressure on opposition defensive lines.
To top it all they have this young sensation in RTS chiming in from the back and creating havoc with his powerful charges and lightning-fast footwork.
This team is the complete package.
    Or is it?
There just seems to be something missing at the moment. I'm sure it's mental more than physical. It's just a gut feeling. I don't like how often they go through flat patches.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe perfection is unattainable. But it shouldn't stop you from trying to achieve it, especially when you have the ability to do so.
If all teams get to September fit and healthy, I expect the Roosters to prevail and lift the trophy.

I must say, I tend to agree with him on a lot of what he said. Especially the part where he thinks there is something missing at the moment. I believe our defence is finding it's feet and our forward pack are enjoying some nice momentum. However our attack in the 20m zone (as highlighted in another thread) is the big concern at the moment. If that doesn't improve, I feel we won't have enough points in us to go all the way this year. To try and beat the likes of Souths, Cowboys and Broncos, we must improve our good area attack.

The Broncos and Souffs worry me more than the Cowboys who's game relies so heavily on 1 player.

The something missing is pearce making something happen in the 20, if he can do what he did in the last month last year, we should have all bases covered and be extremely hard to beat.

Souffs are still a huge chance. I fear them far more than the Qld teams.

I think Pearce would benefit greatly if given a weeks break. I just don't know when.

I'd rest him against the Knights. A team we will probably struggle against because they're shit and we tend to play our worst against those teams. The addition of Hastings' enthusiasm to the team could be of great benefit against them.

The attack in the 20 metre area is not as big of a concern as it is made out to be by fans with too much spare time to contemplate things.

I have been saying it for years, Pearce is clearly not a natural footballer. He makes everything look extremely clunky and too often rushes plays. As a result Maloney who is largely a ball runner has had to change his game to compensate and play a greater role in playmaking which is also not his strongest suite. This is a massive concern as th Cowboys, Broncos and Souths all have a pair of halves that are much more gifted and can turn forward dominance into a lot more points, despite perhaps having inferior back lines or even forward packs.

More importantly in clutch situations is when natural ability shines in difficult situations, this is not a situation Pearce usually shines. It is when instincts take over and guys like Thurston, Reynolds, Hunt, Keary etc stand up. We don't need Pearce to be quite at their standard but honestly he is a long way behind them. I am more worried next year, Hastings looks to me like a classical style halfback, not a 5/8. I don't see Pearce as a 5/8 at all, with no RTS providing the spark from the back, I think he is going to be horribly exposed next year. Hastings will be responsible for running the the team and standing up in tight games to provide the difference.

Best spine imo, the variety in their kicking game is brilliant. Though Kingbilly tells me their fullback is rubbish lol.

I reckon Broncos and Cowboys are our main rivals Souths will just miss top 4 and be eliminated 2nd week. But this year is ours to lose I feel i am very confident we will lift the trophy first Sunday in October

Robbo had a chance to rest him when last weeks game was well and truly in rhe bag earlier in the piece and put Hastings on - giving him much needed exposure in the halves. I was surprised when he kept him and only gave Hastings under 10 minutes??

You must admit though BAW, their conversion rate in that space is atrocious given the gluttony of ball.

Why are you on this forum?

According to you, debate is unnecessary.

                          What an odd cookie.

I think Souffs rely on Ingkis about as much as Cows on Thurston.

I don't mean to bag our team at all but it seems that third gear is enough to win 85% of our games and this makes it hard for us to find that 4th and 5th gear. We seem to only do enough. Souths decimated a poor Newcastle because the stick to their plan and play as if they were playing a Brisbane type team. We start playing as if we can score every play and try to go around rather than win the power game up the middle.
