  • Sam Moa angry at inconsistency over referee-touching

Sydney Roosters prop Sam Moa felt hard done by when he was suspended for touching referee Gavin Reynolds. His sense of injustice only grew when he heard that St George Illawarra hooker Heath L’Estrange did the same thing last Monday and escaped censure.
“I was in violation of the rules and I will cop it on the chin,” Moa said. “But I was a bit disappointed it got cited in the first place. I am aware Gavin Reynolds was quoted saying he didn’t think anything of it.
“He didn’t feel intimidated at all by it. It is done now. I got a fair hearing. Just disappointed it even got cited. I think everyone who knows me knows there wasn’t any intent in the action.
“It was more of a natural reaction — I am familiar with the ref, I have met him a few times. I felt like I know him. I think they just want to send a message out there.
“It’s just disappointing I got charged.”
Reynolds has been a regular visitor to Roosters training in recent years, in the process building up a relationship with Moa.
“Gavin has been to a few of our training sessions throughout the year,” Moa said.
“I have had a running joke with him. There wasn’t any aggression in what I was saying to him or the way I approached him. I think they just wanted to make it clear you can’t have any contact with the ref.
“I just hope they’re consistent with that throughout the year.”
When it was pointed out L’Estrange had touched a match official on Monday night, Moa said: “I was told Heath touched the ref and nothing came out of that, so it’s a bit disappointing.”
Asked about the L’Estrange incident last night, the NRL said the wording of the rule left the discretion in the hands of the match review committee. In the case of L’Estrange, the committee felt the contact was only minor.
That was cold comfort to Moa, although he was keen to put it behind him as he prepared to make his return from a one-match ban against the Gold Coast in Gosford on Sunday.
The Roosters have lost their past seven games at the venue and they head to the NSW central coast wary of the danger presented by the Titans.
“They beat us, I think, last year and the year before,” Moa said.
“Everyone is writing them off but we’re certainly not doing that. We’re expecting a physical encounter.”
Moa was recently linked with the Titans although he was quick to distance himself from a move yesterday after receiving assurances from the club’s hierarchy, including coach Trent Robinson, that he was still wanted.
“As it stands, I signed a two-year contract last year and if I had any intention of not honouring that or chasing a longer-term deal, I would have done that,” Moa said.
“I know where I stand with Robbo.”

Jamie Soward says he is happy Josh Jackson won't miss Origin III for the tackle he made on the Panthers playmaker.

Jamie Soward is pleased that Josh Jackson has been cleared to play State of Origin III, after the Canterbury forward's tackle on the Penrith five-eighth was downgraded at the NRL judiciary on Wednesday night.
Soward revealed on Thursday that Jackson apologised to him after the game for the dangerous throw and the former NSW pivot said he has moved on from the controversial incident despite being "dumped on his head".
"It wasn't Josh's fault, it was just a technique," Soward said.
"He's got good technique and just got put in the wrong position. I'm sure he didn't mean to do that. That's probably what the judiciary felt as well. They looked at it like that. He said sorry after the game and as far as I'm concerned, it was one of those tackles that went wrong and thankfully for both of us - for him for Origin, for me, I didn't get hurt."
"As a New South Welshmen I didn't want to see him miss an Origin but it was a dangerous tackle at the end of the day. The consistency of what is a dangerous tackle, it was probably deserved, there's no 10 in the bin any more."
However Soward was equivocal as to whether the NRL's supposed crackdown on lifting tackles was working, and whether enough was being done for player safety.
"I don't know what I'm supposed to do when I get picked up and put on my head, but that's just the way it happened," Soward said.
"You don't like to see that. Most of the players have been really controlled. It was just one of those tackles that got out of hand. We've moved on from that."
Sydney Roosters prop Sam Moa said there was widespread confusion amongst players about the judiciary process.

Moa was suspended last week for one match for making contact with a referee in the Roosters' win over the Warriors two weeks ago, the same punishment meted out to Jackson, who originally faced a three-game ban.
"That's where the confusion comes in. I get a game for making a friendly contact with the referee and something like the Josh Jackson tackle gets a week also," Moa said.

It must be pretty infuriating for Moa. And the club.

And here I was thinking that the NRL was making a stand that this is a black and white rule. But now all of a sudden there is discretion?

Given there is still room for discretion, I maintain that Moa's suspension was the most ridiculous I can recall.

So he should be. How can they justify one over the other. Didn't use any common sense.

The Roosters' guernsey seems to cloud their judgement.

So it seems the MRP use the same discretion when dealing with the Roosters as the on field game managers do?

Anyone know what minute Stranger's touch came in? I remember seeing it while watching the replay, but can't recall when. Want to get a screenshot of it.

I saw the L'Strange incident and even the TV commentators commented at the time that he could be in trouble.

The real issue with the MCP is the perceived inconsistency and apparent selectiveness of charging.

Common sense within the NRL has become so rare that situations like this just fuel the conspiracy theories.
Too many grey areas on field and off.

Sam's "touch" was so innocuous that anyone who even puts a finger on a ref from then on should cop a suspension.

the problem is we have people on the MRC who do not have consistant, sound judgment.

time to sack the offenders. The NRL is run by Barnham Circus

I remember a famous incident back in...I'm going to guess very early 90s....1990...where Blocker Roach patted Eddie Ward on the head after being sinbinned for backchat, nothing came of that. Was that against Manly?

Pretty sure he got six weeks for that one.

I looked it up - 4 weeks and a $5000 fine for patting Eddie Ward on the head. (Unlike Moa's, Roach's was an act of insolence and disrespect.)
