  • Roosters problems are home to roost

    "It's horrible," the skipper muttered.

Coach Brian Smith was also succinct in his appraisal of the dramatic fall of last year's grand finalists, who conceded two soft tries to the Titans after leading 13-12 with just seven minutes left.

They are now 2-6 with the season one-third of the way completed.

Asked if his men had suffered any injuries in the demoralising loss, Smith dead-panned: "Nope ... just a lot of kicked arse."

The lone positive to emerge from the fulltime hooter was that it cleared the way for next week's opponent - the bye.

With their confidence levels decimated, both Smith and the players admitted the respite had come at the perfect time to re-assess what appears to be an inexplicable demise.

"It's pretty obvious we need to make some changes," Smith said. "We need to beef ourselves up and come back bigger and stronger.

"It's worrying from how we are playing, but it's not [yet] worrying about making the playoffs."

Fielding 11 players that contested last year's decider, the Roosters began brightly before a healthy contingent of travelling Tricolour fans among the 15,000-strong crowd.

But after BJ Leilua crossed to give them a 4-0 lead, shoddy handling and ill-discipline invited Gold Coast back into the match and the teams went to the interval on even terms.

The Titans grabbed the lead straight after halftime when nippy pivot Will Zillman claimed the first of his double, and they were unlucky not to forge further ahead after having three more tries disallowed.

The hosts also finished on the wrong end of an 8-4 penalty count, which sparked a running battle between the whistleblowers and prop Luke Bailey.

But just when they appeared destined for defeat, the Roosters lifted courtesy of a 51st-minute hit from debutant Lana Tasi on Greg Bird. Frank-Paul Nuuausala barged over moments later to level, before Mitchell Pearce edged the Roosters in front with a drop goal on 67 minutes.

The Titans refused to wilt and stole back the momentum when winger David Mead charged through four defenders in 73rd minute. Zillman's second try on the siren sealed the win - and another fortnight of soul-searching at Bondi.

"I suppose some of our confidence is down," Anasta said. "That's the big thing at the moment. A few guys are struggling with their own form."

Second-rower Nate Myles is not among the strugglers, but the standout Rooster finished the game with his Test hopes in jeopardy after being placed on report for a dangerous throw on Bird.

"It's the last thing you want if you are fortunate enough to be selected," Myles said.

Smith also ruled out a return from five-eighth Todd Carney when the Roosters next take the field against Cronulla in a fortnight.

"I'll be making the decision when Toddy comes back and I can guarantee that I've not even thought about him playing," Smith said.
Sounds like Smith may be dropping some deadweight. Finally.

I liked the last few seconds of the media conference when Smithy tells the journos he's got some Roosters to sort out.

On his past record, wouldn't surprise if Smithy kept the deadweight and got rid of the good !

Here is he also vowing changes.

          http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/l...430-1e2dy.html

He's got a long list of choices to change.

Captain Myles (with talks of contract extension)
Minichello and Anasta to be dropped...on their farking heads and told to pull em out of their arses in Newtown.
BJ to centre, Aubs to back row, Linnett onto the wing.
Phil Graham enlisted and deported to Aphganistan as a ritual sacrifice to [insert diety here] to get our season back on track.
Justin Carney back in and left there to gain form.
          Leave Ryles out "injured".

          It's a start.

          Chook.

This season is over. May as well run with a bunch of youngsters.

I am pissing myself! The first thing he needs to do is find a fullback who offers something in attack, to take the pressure of Pearce and Anasta. But I will walk naked through my main street if Smith does it! I am very confident I will not have to remove my clothes.

                Yeah I agree with most...

                In my opinion...

                #1 Linnett in, Arona out

                - Linnett to centre (our best young centre)
                - Aubusson to backrow (his best position for defense)
                - Nuuausala to bench (his best position for impact)
                - Arona out

                #2 Perrett in, Graham out

                #3 Ryles in, Conn out

                #4 Masoe in, Tasi out

Conn and Graham are nothing more than depth IMO, and Arona and Tasi are talented but they are works in progress.

                    5. Sam Perrett
                    6. Tom Symonds (Carney back ASAP)
                    7. Mitchell Pearce
                    8. Mose Masoe
                    9. Jake Friend

                    15. Lama Tasi
                    16. Tirinau Arona
                    17. Frank Paul Nuuausala

The way I see it, we will go nowhere this season just letting Minichiello, Anasta, Graham, Riddell and Ryles play out what should be their final years at this club. The add little to the side - in some cases, they detract from it. We may as well build for next year, in the hope that once the passengers are out of our side, we click later in the year. With Carney back, our side is balanced.

But, to be honest, Smith won't have the balls to go anywhere near this team, and we will suffer a year of mediocrity.

We need more speed out wide!
When we shifted to the right early in the game we were killing them!
Could have been 3 tries easy, if B.J was a yard quicker!

So why didnt we go back to the right, why the fark do our playmakers kick to the useless winger on the left, when Bj and Skid are our best under the highball??

Once we are completely out of finals contention, I would go:

                          1. Naughton
                          2. Carney
                          3. Linnett
                          4. SKD
                          5. Perrett

                          6. Kheirallah
                          7. Pearce

                          8. Masoe
                          9. Friend
                          10. Kennedy
                          11. JWH
                          12. Aubusson
                          13. Myles

                          14. Conn
                          15. FPN
                          16. Symonds
                          17. Leilua

I'd like us to develop Arona and Tasi slowly. Just a game here and there over the coming two seasons.

Your agenda is quite amusing to say the least. Anasta is the imposter in the halves, not your mate JJ. If you think the JJ should be the fall guy for the dismal teams performance, you are watching a diffrent game to me! Do you honestly think this guy was going to be the next Joey? Shit even Wallace looks good with good ball player outside him.
