  • Membership and crowds

The Vermin have hit 35,000 members. We have something like 16,000.

With such a huge difference in memberships, why does this not produce a corresponding difference in home game attendances? Their home crowd average is 16,941 while ours is 15,010.

Are half of their members goldfish? Or dead?

I'd be interested to see a table of club memberships compared to home attendances. I suspect the Vermin are statistical aberrations in this regard...

They seem to have a lot of non ticketed members and interstate members . Explains why I see so many of their stickers on cars

Sounds similar to the allegations at the royal commission into union corruption, where unions allegedly signed up members without their knowledge.

They do hand out free memberships to people in the community. So I imagine a number of them would be freebies. Also I'm pretty sure you sign up for a membership when you play in the souths junior comp.

Does everybody who owns a membership go to all of our home games? I'm an out of state member who goes to about 3 home games a year excluding the ANZAC day game which i go to regardless if it's our home game or theirs.

Maybe Tom Cruise has signed up some scientologist mates.

I'm an interstate member and would go to all games if I lived in Sydney.

Same boat. I'm out of state but still a bronze member (so it my wife). We go to as many games as possible (both home and away)... sometimes this is 10+ games, other times it's less.

Right now we both work full-time in busy professions and are doing full-time study (I do 3 subjects a semester and have Saturday classes most weeks) so there hasn't been much time to watch games. This year I've been to the Manly trial (Central Coast) and the Cronulla game... really should use that ticketed membership more.

Baby on the way though so hmmm... we'll see maybe I can recruit our child as a Roosters fan and attend more games as a 'family outing' once I graduate (around about March next year).

PS - boooo to the Roosters... I offered to take a month off full-time work to do an unpaid internship in the area I'm studying. Nup... no interns. Oh well, I suppose it's just their policy.

Maybe Johnny Depp can be recruited seeing he is in the country shooting a film.

There are just a lot more souths fans than Roosters fans, basically.

Their home crowds undoubtedly take a massive hit from playing out of that shit stain of a stadium known as ANZ. If they played out of the SFS instead of taking the quick money at homebush they'be be averaging over 20,000 a game right now I am sure. I expect when their contract is up at ANZ the SCG trust will make a big play to get them back.

They also have smart membership programs like allowing you to add a small amount to your membership which essentially buys another membership for a "poor" member, effectively doubling their membership numbers. That entire "Souths Cares" charity is essentially just a scam tax haven that they use to increase their membership numbers. It took in like $900K last year and spent less than 10% on charitable causes. The rest is on staff costs (i.e. bumping up player salaries by paying them for charity appearances)
