  • SKD re-signs for 2 years

The Sydney Roosters are pleased to announce that Shaun Kenny-Dowall has today signed an extended agreement for a further two seasons, keeping him at the Club until the end of 2017. “I’m so proud to represent the Roosters. I’ve grown up here and this is my home,” said Kenny-Dowall.

“We have a fantastic team here on and off the field, especially our coach Trent Robinson who has helped develop my game. There’s a great culture at the Roosters and I’m so happy that I’ll continue to play my role at the Club for a further two years,” he added.

Roosters Chief Operating Officer Football, Brian Canavan, was also pleased to have Kenny-Dowall locked in to the Club’s long-term plans.

“Shaun came to the Roosters as part of our pathway program as a 16 year-old and has developed into not only a wonderful player and Clubman, but also a wonderful ambassador for both the Roosters and the NRL,” said Canavan.

Roosters Head Coach, Trent Robinson, added: “Shaun is a terrific player on the field and just as importantly a terrific man away from the game. A true Clubman, Shaun’s growth over the years has seen him develop into a leader for our young crop to follow and its great news that he will continue to play his role at the Roosters for a further two years.”

27 year-old Kenny-Dowall is currently contesting his ninth season of first grade. He made his NRL debut with the Tricolours in the opening round of the 2007 season and has played 185 games with the Foundation Club to date.

Currently third on the Roosters try-scoring tally (100), behind Bill Mullins (104) and Anthony Minichiello (139), Kenny-Dowall has also represented New Zealand on 14 occasions to date.

I may be one of the few, but I'm very happy about this. I think he has been one of our best this year, particularly the last couple of weeks. And he is a Chook through and through.

Wonderful news. I don't buy into the SKD bashing. While I'm the first to admit he's had his moments in the past, over the last few years he has improved both his handling and his defense. At his current scoring rate, especially with a fit Fergo in the side, SKD will give Mini's record a good shake before he's through.

Should we be concerned that all our re-signings this year have been until 2017 and only 2 year deals?

                SST - 2 years
                JWH - 2 years
                Napa - 2 years
                SKD - 2 years

The same year Pearce, Guerra & Evans all come off contract.

Only Jake Friend is signed beyond 2017.

Could it be that the new Broadcast rights come in at around that time, thus cap increases again.

I've brought this up a couple times and most people have just disregarded it.

I think we're going to have bigger cap problems then this year in 2017. Unless the club is banking on the TV deal making the cap much larger, then we have to watch out for other clubs making big plays for our players though.

Players would be silly to commit beyond the new television deal now.

It's definitely something to do with the Broadcast rights, I just can't figure out what the logic behind it is.

It seems like a massive risk to me.

On the plus side, it makes negotiations more competitive. We could get a stack of players playing for contracts in 2017.

You never know who will be performing and who we'll want in 2 years time. I personally like regular negotiations because players who work hard can get what they're worth and the dead wood can fark off.

I'm sure player managers are over the moon with all the 2 year deals but players are still more than willing to sign 3-4 year deals, we've seen plenty this year. Just not at our club. There's plenty of clauses that can be put in contracts to negate the new TV deal, it doesn't explain it.

There's clearly some kind of thought process behind this and it seems to be driven by our club.

We can of course extend deals early. There's nothing to stop us extending Friend, JWH and Pearce's deals in mid-2016.

Which i might add is what we did with Friendy last year.
