After watching our attack in the Tigers 20m zone last night, I feel that we must continue to offer variation in our plays if we are to continue to put scores on like last night. What I noticed was that many of our set plays were a bit different to what we have mostly seen since Robbo took over in 2013. Whether it was the angle of the decoy runners, or using two lead runners over two passes (rather than the standard two lead runners where Pearce either hits Cords or goes out the back), among other things, I feel we introduced some nice variation which the Tigers weren't expecting.
I am hoping that what I referred too above wasn't just a ploy by Roboo to get one over JT, who no doubt knows our traditionally attacking structure inside and out, and as such we go back to our fairly traditional plays next week and over the rest of the season. I am not saying those plays are ineffective, but I feel that due to being a heavily targeted side, what worked for us over the last two seasons, alone, won't be enough this season. I hope that we continue to vary our attacking structure and put doubt in the oppositions minds. The doggies, next week, are quite a tough defensive side when they're on their game, and I think we'll need to continue our attacking variation to knock them over.
On a side note, it was nice to see us move the ball to Jennings early in sets last night. This allowed us to dominate the ruck up the middle as his quick plays the balls allowed us to head back to middle and stamp up the field. Imo we haven't gone wide early in sets enough this year, and if we continue to do so I think we will continue to enjoy solid yardage in the middle and therefore consistent field position in the red zone. Our bombs will also me effective as chasers will have less distance to cover to contest the bomb.
