  • Roosters discipline lets them down again; cowboys excel

Absolutely splendid discipline by cowboys tonight, to only concede one penalty in general play. That's one in 80 minutes to our ten conceded.

A lesser side might have been tempted to slow down the play the ball or not get back 10 metres in defence, but to their credit they played by the rules for the entire match in spite of spending a great deal of it standing behind their goal posts watching Maloney line up conversions.

We on the other hand are an embarrassment. Once again we gave the match officials (including Maxwell who must be so sick of having to punish us) no alternative other than to give the cowboys repeat sets of six (usually late in tackle counts) to help them up the field rather than letting them have to do so by playing football.

I thought the penalty count should have been 20-2 or 30-2 against us, not 10-2. Make no mistake, we can't rely on the referees continuing to be kind to us like they were tonight and turning a blind eye to most of our infringements as they did this evening. For one thing, they know they are accountable so they can't be seen to be favouring us like they did tonight and have been for about 10 years.

So really, I'm afraid to say this was a bit of a hollow victory this evening. I'm sure you'll agree had the referees been more impartial and penalised us as we really deserved, the score surely would have been closer - maybe roosters 28 cowboys 6?

Did anyone hear the refs tell James Tamou he'd gone ealry, still made the tackle and no penalty?

    Amazing discipline.

      It is institutionalised cheating.

Tonight was more proof if it was needed.

The sad thing is, was the 10-2 count EVER in doubt?

      Nope.

      Cheats.

        Yep I saw that...

I thought it was poor form because for example they slammed Fergo on a technicality (with Pearce saying 'he didn't mean it... he just got the timing wrong because he's been out for a while and no advantage was gained') but when a Kangaroo intentionally went in early in order to gain advantage he got a simple warning. Go figure!

IMO you can't warn ANYBODY if you observe a breach of the rules, particularly if they gain advantage by breaking the rules close to the try line. Blow that whistle because their breach of the rules has given them an advantage (e.g. A repeat set or has stolen valuable metres). They'll never learn otherwise (pretty well the reasoning the ref gave Pearce when he said the call on Fergo was a bit harsh).

The good old tactic of tackling Tupou in the air (in order to nullify the advantage of his height/athleticism) was rife as well and it's ALWAYS near a try line whether it's in attack or defence. You can get sent off for tackling in the air because it's effing dangerous so I don't know why it constantly gets ignored just because Tupou plays on and often scores regardless of the cheating. Billy Slater was allowed to kick Klemmer in the head because he suspected he was running in to tackle him mid-air... I dunno if Tupou would get away with that one.

Anyhow... there's at least 2 penalties that coulda been called but weren't. We were still sloppy and I didn't see any non-deserving penalties handed to us. However, I feel that the refs often get sympathetic towards the opposition when we have them on the ropes (e.g. say 'I won't penalise him because they're down 20-0 and the Chooks will be fine anyway'), which prevents us from delivering the knockout punch. IMO they need to be more consistent and start going 'that was a penalty... I don't care about the score... that's a penalty every day of the week and that's all I care about'.

Meh we won, it's 1:45am and I should probably sleep instead of ranting about BS. Should I hit post? Meh fark it... 'Post Reply'... ENJOY folks!

As Johnny is fond of saying, you are abusing sarcasm.
Brilliant stuff player 1 and very funny to boot.

What you cleverly have brought to light was predicted by some on this forum (I think it might have been Tommy Smith) and generally anticipated by those here who are of the opinion that the Roosters cop the rough end of the pineapple when it comes to penalties. As for the others who are not of the same opinion, what say you?

I'm not a gambler but can you bet on penalty counts? I may get to retire if we can

The penalties didn't hurt us. A lot of the time we give away penalties on our line intentionally. It's undeniable and there were probably at least three of them last night. It helps us set because our goal line defence is the best in the business. Who cares if we give away a penalty on our line on tackle 1-2? It's giving them penalties in their own 20-30 that is infuriating and that didn't happen last night.

This has been the case for years in RL, give them a warning and maybe penalise them on the third time.
