  • Riddell out vs Warriors

Sydney Roosters bench hooker Mark Riddell did not make the trip to Auckland yesterday, with coach Brian Smith preferring to rest him for the match against the Warriors tomorrow. ''I've had a few problems with my back and I'm just trying to manage it,'' Riddell said yesterday.

''With the flights [to New Zealand], the bus rides and coming home the next day, Brian Smith thought it best to leave me to get fresh for the games coming up. It wasn't worth going to New Zealand just for 20 minutes of game time.''

Daniel Conn is expected to join the 17-man squad against an as named Warriors line-up.

hmm... back issue or not, bit surprised we're not taking Piggy as part of the extended bench. If something were to happen to Friend before the game, I guess Glenn Dumbrell from Toyota Cup might get called up? Anyone who's watched u20s got an opinion of him? I noticed he got a small write up in RLW last week. Apparently we beat 5 other clubs for his sig and his previous coach reckons he's the fastest player out of dummy-half he's ever seen. Mind you that was a quote from Dumbrell's manager.

I'm more confident with Conn in the side.

            Chook.

I could see this coming. Friend played 80 minutes last week and was one of our best. He stayed on the field when Riddell came on. Interesting to see if this continues

All 3 squads are over there, Jets play at Mt Smart at 1pm Kiwi time - Kara, Arona etc could all get called up and cover at hooker for a match.

You know I couldn't miss out posting on this thread jf

So is the old "sore back" excuse going to be used by Ryles and Piggy every time they get dropped and avoid having to play for Newtown?

I don't think too many believe that Friend can't and shouldn't be playing 80 minutes but what will be interesting is if Smithy still thinks he needs a 20 minute rest or if Friend gets injured during the game who will take on that dummy half role. There is always a Plan B and until Watts gets back, they should use it as their plan A with Piggy as Plan B in case of injury.

Conn always needed to be in that side whether it was at Piggy's or Ryles' expense. I think Smithy made the right choice although I would like to see Ryles get into a bit of form playing for Newtown for a couple of weeks.

Touch wood that doesn't happen but if it did I'd say Smith would go for Kara. I remember hearing that he was pretty impressed with him when he was training with the firsts in the off-season.

I've seen all four 20's games so far and Dumbrell looks an enormous prospect but is still a bit raw. Only plays around 50 minutes with Nick Eshman coming on to fill in at dummy-half. But I would have to agree with Dumbrell's manager, he has an uncanny ability to make a full or half break every time he takes a scoot. Runs more like a fullback when he gets in space imo. Easily one of the most dangerous players on the field every week so far. Only 18 so if he keeps developing nicely we'll have some hookers to choose from in a couple of years.

Byron Fruean would be the darkhorse. He's been killing it coming on for Kara at Newtown. Unbelievable strength for such a small bloke.

yep, he is on a diet. Excellent news, I hope Conn tears them apart.
