  • I will admit.

I like what Harrigan and Raper have done to clean up the play the ball. Making the players strike at the ball with their feet when playing it as well as the crack down on walking off the mark I think have improved that area of our game. It has slowed down the play the ball process and allowed the markers to be far more effective.

I just hope they remain consistent.

    Chook.

I agree with walking off the mark sideways like a Souths player did but I think BJ walked over cause he tripped over the ball and I didn't agree with that. I think that the last one was ridiculous.

Now all they have to do is clean up the forward passes from the dummy halves. There were a couple of penalties blown today, but there could have been dozens...

Could'nt believe my ears this morning on The Roast:-
Gus defending the refs, on more than one occasion ??

Wild weather, earthquakes, tsunamis ... now this.
Truely is the end of the world ?

The general standard of refereeing this weekend has actually been pretty good. There have been some visible errors (i.e. the ref getting in the way on the Gold Coast last night) but the general tone has been good. I agreed with a lot of was Gus said on the Sunday Roast today - the games have looked tough and proper this weekend, and the refs have been okay.

Not an error, just an unfortunate rule anomaly

From the 2010 edition of the Rulebook...

                10. (e) When a tackled player attempts to play the ball backwards but accidentally deflects the ball forward, a scrum ensues with the non-offending team having the loose head and put-in.

This interpretation went by the wayside on Fri nite!

                And...

8.1 The Referee must carry a whistle which he shall blow to commence and terminate each half of the game. Except for these occasions the blowing of the whistle shall temporarily stop the play. The Referee shall blow the whistle:
                (a) when a try or a goal has been scored (b) when the ball has gone out of play (c) when restarting play, other than at a scrum
                (d) when he detects a breach of the Laws of the Game, except when to stop the play would be to the disadvantage of the non-offending team
                (e) when play is irregularly affected by the ball or the player carrying the ball coming into contact with the Referee, a Touch Judge, or with any person not taking part in the match or with any object which should not normally be on the playing field
                (f) when any irregularity, not provided for in these Laws, occurs and one team unjustifiably gains an advantage
                (g) when a stoppage is necessary in order to enforce the Laws or for any other reason.
8.2 Where a referee has stopped play to administer a caution to a player or players he shall indicate extra time until he blows his whistle to restart play.

And there it is. There is no anomaly. Dragons should not have gotten a try. Scrum. Attacking team's (I think) loose & feed. Basic stuff. We'll see if they have the guts to admit they stuffed up.

I remember it from when I used to referee. These rules/interpretations have not changed since last year.

on the commentary, rabs said he 'didn't make an attempt to play the ball back', which was a completely stupid thing to say, clearly he made an attempt
I support two NRL teams, the Roosters and whoevers playing Souths

Rabs makes plenty of mistakes during calls. I guess he has to talk- there can't be too much dead time- and he pads out the call with anything that comes to mind imo.

I kinda hope one of the other stations wins the TV rights. Wouldn't mind a new commentary team.

The BJ penalty was rubbish, should of been a scrum.

The new play the ball interpretations suit us. If they keep the standard up we will be hard to beat.

They had a meeting early last week and apprently Bill conceeded that Gus knows a thing or 2 about the game and I think by there end of it, there was even some man love going on......

Harrigan assured everyone at the NRL forum that they would not let the consistancy slip.....I guess only time will tell......

They could have pinged Inglis a couple of times for playing the ball to the side.

And I still don't understand why BJ got penalised.

exactly right - should have been a scrum

he made every attempt to play it with his foot

the same thing haqppened in the Raiders game yesterday, except the ball went more sideways than BJ's, and that was called a scrum
