  • Forward passes, that 'Aren't Forward

After watching the replay of Friday night, I agree that both Wessers pass and Scumdow passes were forward. I think the commentators act like physic teachers telling us about 'forward momentum' and 'how it will float forward'. I never did physics but it doesn't take a graduate to see that both of these guys were running sideways and threw it forward. Wesser got away with it IMO because he turned his body slightly away to appear like a back pass but Scumdow was clearly forward. Neither pass had forward momentum, they were just forward!

Take a look at the first two tries in the Storm v Manly game and tell me what the difference is. Amazing how some players can pass it backwards and some with virtually the same speed/angle pass it way forward yet our expert physics commentators try to tell us different.

Yes I thought they were good passes. Where they start and where it lands was good. Unlike the passes by Wesser and Scumdow.

Basically it does make sense, if you are running forward at x metres per second and you throw the ball backwards at a speed y metres per second .

A combination of the angle the ball is passed and the difference in between the x and y speeds determine how the ball travels in relation to the markings on the field.

Obviously the higher the speed the player is travelling at and the lower the angle the ball is passed at (assuming a flat ball is 0 degrees) will result in the ball being caught in position infront from where it was passed in relation to the field markings.

What is ridiculous is that this bit of physics is used inappropriately by halfwit commentators.

Essentially its all about the angle that the ball is passed at, and the Sandow pass was def thrown at a forward angle, hence the correct decision and the stupidity of Gould and Stirling confirmed.

I think the best tell for the average punter is to simply look at the hands.

          That's usually the give-away.

The easiest way is to call it forward EVERY time. Yep..just freakin call the penalty. All that 'ball floated forward' bullshit. I flunked physics cause chemistry was more my cup of tea but its too confusing mun! I doubt the players are running at the speed of freakin sound so how can the ball be propelled forward in a backward motion...dunno???

              too much acid i say.

I posted some snapshots in the other thread which shows the pass thrown was thrown forward without doubt....

I think generally the refs seem to fark up with fumbles/forward passes/knock ons.

If a ball drops, the ref will basically call it forward unless it goes back 10m or so. Many appear to go sideways or neither way... always called forward. This is especially true when a player fumbles.

Was it Mose on the weekend? I forget. Somebody played the ball and was facing sorta sideways a bit and tripped on the ball. It still went backwards and while awkward I was pretty angry that the ref then called a turnover. I know I know... it's the rule, but it p!sses me off big time every time I see it. This is mainly because it completely changes the momentum of the game.

IMO the rules were created so that you couldn't cheat, not to punish people who have farked up and gained no advantage. Sure if you drop the ball and it bounces forwards then you have no case, but I think flat balls (particularly off an awkward fumble) should be play on.

Same with passes... none of this momentum cr@p!!! If it's flat or backwards then no problem. If the ball goes forwards then blow the whistle. Doesn't matter what your intention was... if you tried doing a flat pass and the wind blew it forward then bad luck.

                  ---

Forgive me, I'm drunk and stressed tonight, so this rant is probably utter cr@p. Oh well...

It was BJ who tripped over the ball and walked forward.
But that is right. If it goes forward, then its forward.
like If you touched the ball but didn't mean to you touched it and its a knock on. too many excuses.

When Sandow passed that ball that was called forward he was completely tangled up. It was forward for your life and Sandow looking confused was not due to the refs getting the call wrong, it was the look of a man with an IQ of 64 trying to comprehend the world around him.

Gus and Sterlo were just gibbering in the moment.

that was an interesting one, I thought a scrum feed to $ouff$ rather than a penalty, but maybe thats a sign of the "new" rule interpretations
