  • Roosters 2011 Preview

Final say for 2011: The Roosters in 2011 will be a force to be reckoned with. On field discipline is critical and with scandal magnets Carney and Friend in the side, off field discipline is just as important. It remains to be seen whether the new refereeing regime will be lighter on the Roosters and their errant ways. Either way, that isn’t a chance the club should take and fixing their discipline is imperative to any possible success. From there it is up to veteran coach Brian Smith to get the best out of what is an outstanding squad, a squad that has suffered no significant losses from the season prior. If their key players live up to their expectations, this could just be the year Brian Smith breaks his drought.

Welcome to The Chookpen DFC005 and thanks for posting.

That "Final say" contains a bit of myth, namely "the Roosters and their errant ways" which suggests the Roosters lack on field discipline. I would suggest there's more to this picture than just the Roosters being errant.

Well, as the preview states, the Roosters had the highest penalty count in the competition last year. That would suggest there is a problem.

The Bulldogs@SFS match being a fine example.

True, but the origins of the problem may not be exclusively with the roosters playing style. Or do you believe that every penalty blown by a referee is warranted according to the application of the rules?

If Brian Smith thinks that the whole thing is just a conspiracy by the refs and there needs to be no work done in the area of discipline and compliance, then we won't even make the 8.

I'm sure Mr Smith worked on this last year and Fittler the year before but it didn't seem to make a difference as the Roosters were still "errant" both years. No doubt Mr Smith will work on it again for season 2011 and I remain an interested bystander to see how the Roosters fare at the hands of officialdom this year after working hard on their issues with discipline and compliance.

Yes it does suggest there is a problem but what it also suggests is that the problem isn't ENTIRELY of the Roosters' own doing or totally within their control by working on and eliminating their errant behaviour.

Have you had a chat to Brian Smith about whether he thinks that last year was a conspiracy or not have you?

You don't think Brian Smith tried to curb the penalty counts against us?

I didn't realise you were his right hand man.

Brian Smith knew exactly which areas the players pushed the envelope with the refs, because thats the way he coached them. Its a fine line with a coaches tactics to see what they can and can't get away with. Different coaches try and get an advantage in different areas.

We are not talking about obvious blunders like a touchie not calling a foot over the sideline out, we are talking about the continual infringement for the same thing week in and week out.
