  • Anasta to stay a Rooster

    From the SMH:

SYDNEY ROOSTERS captain Braith Anasta is confident of finalising a new deal to remain at the club and insists he is happy to play in the second row this season.

With star playmaker Todd Carney sidelined by a groin injury until the season-opening clash with South Sydney on March 11, Roosters coach Brian Smith has opted to give rookie Mark Kheirallah the No.6 jersey for Saturday night's Foundation Cup clash with Wests Tigers at the SFS rather than play Anasta at five-eighth.

But after admitting towards the end of last season that he was struggling to come to terms with the move into the forwards, Anasta said he was now comfortable wearing the No.11 jersey.

''I'm playing the same as I was last year. My role hasn't changed, only the number has changed,'' Anasta said. ''I think the sooner everyone gets used to me in that number the better.''

Anasta's switch in to the back row to accommodate Carney at five-eighth in the second half of last season sparked speculation that the former NSW Origin representative was either on the outer at the club or would leave. But Anasta told the Herald after kicking the remarkable last-second field goal that forced their finals match against Wests Tigers into golden point and kept the Roosters' season alive that he didn't want to play anywhere else.

Despite further speculation about his future during the off-season, Anasta again said yesterday he did not want to play for another club and revealed that talks with Roosters management had been positive.

''I am comfortable with how things are going,'' Anasta said. ''I have had a talk with a few people around the club and would like to think that I will stay here. I am pretty much going to keep it behind closed doors now and hope that it gets sorted out sooner rather than later, and I think it will … I really enjoyed the back end of the season and I would like to try and progress in this position as well which is why Smithy has trained me there even though Toddy is injured.''

Besides the selection of Kheirallah, who played wing and fullback in the Roosters' NYC team last season, Smith has named a team for the Foundation Cup that is very close to the one that lost the grand final to St George Illawarra.

''Mark has got a great work ethic on and off the field and he is confident, too, so he has really fitted into the squad and any challenge that has been thrown at him he has really stepped it up,'' Anasta said.

''He has got good skill and I was doing some kicking with him yesterday, and he kept finding the mark with his kicks, but I think probably the best part of his game is his speed. He is lightning. He has been thrown into the deep end a bit but he has been handling it easy and while it is going to be a test for him on Saturday, we have no doubt he can handle it.''

Anasta also backed his former Bulldogs teammate Matt Utai to make a successful comeback to the NRL after finalising a one-year deal with the Tigers.

i think kherrillah is begining to firm in my mind at least as minis heir apparent. The fact that he is spending time in the halves is a bonus because it means he will be a capable ball player from fullback as well as boating that speed and try scoring potency he showed last year in the 20s.

I see him as a towers clone except it appears as though he is rated more highly than luke by the club putting him ahead of him in the pecking order.

given that you've replied Chook, I've at least gotten a top edge over the slips?

              surely?

but yes, I was hoping for a bit more

He will get another year and I would not be surprised to see that extended.

I totally agree with you Roz,i believe Keirallah is slowly being groomed to take over Mins rolei.

All he has to do is keep improving and i believe he will get his shot!

HE CLAIMED to be "confused and disappointed" at being ruthlessly told he was unwanted by the Sydney Roosters.

Nick Politis, though, can be a persuasive man. A month after being informed he would not be re-signed, The Daily Telegraph can reveal that the club's inspirational skipper Braith Anasta will sign a new deal with the Sydney Roosters within the next fortnight.

Both parties have all but agreed to the deal - the only sticking point is whether Anasta will seek a two-year deal. The Roosters will be offering him a contract for one season.

It is understood Anasta will sign shortly and then work toward another one year contract for 2013 - perhaps his final season in the NRL.

Politis, the powerful Roosters chairman, stepped in after Anasta revealed he would be forced out of Bondi Junction.

But it seems peace has broken out and Anasta will now not be forced to head to North Queensland, who had shown interest in the former Test player over the past six months.

Roosters CEO Steve Noyce was yesterday reluctant to discuss any contract talk regarding Anasta, and would only say: "The dialogue we have had is going in the right direction."

At the time his contract dispute became public, Roosters greats were quick to display solid support for Anasta, who guided the Roosters into last year's NRL grand final. Anasta, 29, will probably look to play another two years of rugby league but has already expressed little desire to play in England. He would not return calls yesterday but Anasta told the media earlier this week: "I've been talking with the club and hopefully we'll get it sorted out behind closed doors as soon as possible.

"I'm confident [of remaining with the Roosters]. Everything that has been said has been said but hopefully in the next couple of months I can re-sign here - that is the goal."

Anasta was this week named in the second-row for the Foundation Cup match against Wests Tigers at the SFS this Saturday night.

Roosters halfback Mitchell Pearce, meanwhile, will return from injury on Saturday night.

"It feels like ages since I last ran out on the field so I'm jumping out of my skin to get out there and get the footy in my hands again,"he told the Roosters website.

"I've also been working on my ability to run at the line and keep the defenders second guessing. So I have put a lot of energy in to my efforts running with the ball and hopefully it pays off during the season."

Thats where Anasta and Willett should have kept it earlier this year.

If Willett didn't advise his client to "comment", we wouldn't have articles like this.

Roosters management should sign Braith Anasta to a two year contract ... at least.

'Captain Courageous', 'Captain Leader', 'Captain Maturity'...he's the man! the Roosters need to guide the younger players.

Calm under pressure in matches, he guided the team to the Grand Final in 2010.

He kicks a mean field goal under pressure too!

It needs to continue...steady as she goes...with captain Anasta at the helm.
