It is in most team's interest to have the interpretation of the rules such that it either slows or speeds up the play the ball. Attacking teams like the Roosters and Tigers will campaign to speed up the play-the-ball, where as those with big forward packs (like Souths) will campaign to slow down the play-the-ball.


Unfortunately, people who know nothing about how the rules can affect team's chances will not be able to distinguish between campaigning and whining.

Regardless of what assists individual teams, the referees have lost control of the ruck in the last year or so and the best way to get it back is to go back to basics.

learn the rules, and adjust our playing style so that we're on the right side of them

be a smart side, not one that is endlessly whining about being on the wrong side of penalty counts

In 2002 Sticky and CA were both compaigning to have the NRL change the intepretation of the Dominant Tackle to suit their respective teams. If Sticky simply adapted we'd be one premiership less.

Confirms you have no idea about how rules surrounding speed of the play-the-ball can drastically alter a team's chances. 2002-2004 dominated by defense, 2005 dominated by touch-footy.

learn the rules, or learn how to exploit the rules.

Fine the boys got caught out with the play off the ball on the weekend, the learn from that and adjust.

But it still baffles me, and i am sure many other league fans, as to why they continue with policing the little petantic rules but the refs cannot still get their big calls correct.

They are paid to be professional referees.........they need to perform their jobs as such.

But they are not very good with the little calls either. And I used to referee in the juniors.

But they are brilliant at making excuses or brushing stuff under the carpet.

Whether or not people realise it, it is CONSISTENCY that really matters.And quite often, especially in the PTB & 10m, teams are not treated consistently.

Remember a fair few years ago when they cracked down on the play the ball? If memory serves me right it was in a game of Parra vs.. I'm gonna say the Knights? There was some ridiculous penalty count. Unless the player put his foot on the ball and played it back, it was blown as a penalty. The players didn't even take heed in that game.

For some reason that game stuck with me (apart from remembering whom was playing) and I always watch the play the ball and let out a coy "He didn't play that properly!"

Just so you know, JWH is the worst. He just steps over the ball.
