  • Smith no fan of latest rule changes

Sydney Roosters coach Brian Smith believes the latest rules crackdown will need some major tweaking before the NRL season starts next month.

The Roosters' 24-22 trial loss to the Bulldogs at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday night was peppered with penalties for play the ball infringements and scrum infractions for players not binding properly.

Referees coach Bill Harrigan had warned clubs that whistlebowers would attempt to clean up the play-the-ball by penalising players who moved off the mark or failed to play the ball with their foot.

Smith was enraged by a scrum penalty decision which saw Jonathan Wright score when the Bulldogs were allowed to take a quick tap close to the Roosters' line.

Wright was able to stroll to the tryline untouched while the Roosters forward pack were still removing themselves from the scrum.

"I think we found one thing tonight that there will be a very quick review on, that's the idea that you can take a quick tap once the mark (is set)," Smith said.

"We'll either have no penalties for players being inside the ten off scrums or we'll have a review on that decision about whether they're going to let guys just run up (and take the tap).

"That's just a walk-in try. The only way you can defend that is to tackle the bloke offside, and that's going to be a sin bin straight away.

"There's just no way to defend that when the referee decides that someone is offside."

The Roosters also paid heavily for play-the-ball infringements, though Smith admitted he had to take some of the blame, revealing he had not informed his players of the referees' directive.

"We took the attitude that we didn't actually talk to our players about the latest refereeing edicts and their decision making processes, we wanted our guys to learn the tough way," he said.

"Part of my thinking about that was we wanted to find out, because we've heard it all before and sometimes the referees only do it for a little while and they dropoff."

Smith said the play-the-ball would now become a focus at Roosters training.

"It's a massive momentum change (to give away a penalty in possession)," he said.

"I'll take Billy Harrigan at his word, he says they're going to stick with those things, and I'm not sure that they will but we'll see."

Second rower Anthony Cherrington, making his return from a right knee injury which ruined his 2010 campaign, is likely to have it confirmed on Monday that his 2011 season is over after suffering a suspected torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

"(Backrower) Daniel Conn was the one who just said to me `Smithy, it's just not fair is it?'" Smith said.

    "It's tough, very tough.

"He (Cherrington) is distressed a bit ... he's a positive sort of bloke but it would test anybody."

After the crappity shield last night, I would just really like the refs to blow up a few forward passes

Yeah, they worry about the play of the ball and the scrum, yet they do nothing about blatant forward passes.

Even with the change of the play of the ball rule, the refs are not even enforcing it properly. you only need to "Make an attempt" to play it with your foot.....kind of makes the rule subjective and redundant doesn't it?????

Instead of cracking down on 1 or 2 things on the game each year, Why dont the refs crack down on themselves and get simple calls right.

If they did something about blatant forward passes, Bennett would need to change his whole coaching style. If they stopped his teams standing 4m offside for the first three tackles after they kick, he would need to retire.

              lose the victim mentality

learn the rules, and adjust our playing style so that we're on the right side of them

be a smart side, not one that is endlessly whining about being on the wrong side of penalty counts

I couldn't stand seeing him and his Nathan Rees head.

And who thought big-headed Hollywood Bill would want the refs going under the radar?

His watch will be even more frustrating than Finch because the arrogance level will increase to match the incompetence level.

learn the rules, or learn how to exploit the rules.

Fine the boys got caught out with the play off the ball on the weekend, the learn from that and adjust.

But it still baffles me, and i am sure many other league fans, as to why they continue with policing the little petantic rules but the refs cannot still get their big calls correct.

They are paid to be professional referees.........they need to perform their jobs as such.

Have you considered coaching yourself? I would gladly call for Smith's sacking and have you installed if you can turn around the penalty counts. In the last 3 years, the Roosters' penalty counts were the worst of any team in 30 years.

                    Are we really that bad?

I know that refereeing a correct play the ball seems pedantic but it will go a long way to cleaning up the game. Letting the attacking rules in the ruck go is artificially speeding up the ruck - whenever they do this the game goes to shit. If you enforce the rules properly in the ruck then the rest of the game stems from there.

They just need to be consistent with this call and the game will be far better for it.

Agreed. You let the attacking side walk 2 metres off the mark, and the defensive side has the option of playing without a marker or getting penalised for not being square. This is where the game turns into touch football style running from dummy half.

I agree with the refs on this occassion that it is an area that needs to be cleaned up. The ruck speed sets the pace and style of the whole game.

                            agree totally

and what the Roosters need to do is get 150% across these interpretations and structure their game accordingly

just like the smart teams who consistently win penalty counts do
