its a good thing you're doing and i respect your initiative. I do love braith and like everyone else and even the club feel dirty about the apparent prospect. This is precisely why there should be more salary cap concessions for older players. It wouldnt be the same to watch the boys go around without him but im just not sure we have much choice. Like most of us i have no intimate understanding of our financial predicament but how would we feel if braith was re-signed and we happened to lose kennedy, cordner and leilua (three of our highest profile youngsters that may not be able to get the sort of money others are offering them in the short-term) with braith going on to retire a couple of years later leaving us far worse for wear.

Leadership wise i think we have enough suitable candidates to assume the responsibility. young tom symonds will become the ball playing wide running backrow leader that braith currently is however with a greater workrate and apptitude as he grows into the role and is a great leader, aubusson, FPN, Myles, Pearce are all candidates imo. I dont want to see braith playing nrl if he does leave us he should go o/s, earn some good coin then rejoin the club in a managerial capacity in a few years like fitzy. I just hope the scenario turns out best for all parties......

This is a really bitter pill given Braith's leadership last year, but it was always going to happen.

As has been said, it was Anasta OR a clutch of youngsters OR another big name (Pearce or Carney). The only option here (and most posters here would probably agree) is to let Anasta go.

Its very hard for someone who has dedicated himself so much to the team in the last few years, but the alternatives would be even harder to take.

Thanks Roz, and I get what you are saying....

I just get a bad taste in my mouth when I think of how Fitzy was cast aside, and feel this is happening again.....
If they chose not to re-new Braiths contract beyond 2011, then it is just something that has to be, I cant say I wont be disapointed, but will accept it as a decison that is for the good of the club..... but this crap about shopping him around before the end of the season does not sit well..... Let the man go out with dignity and repect that he deserves
I know I have an emotional conection to this also, and that makes it a bit more personal to me and my family.....
At the end of the day it is all about the roosters, and I truly believe that this sort of thing would be very bad for the team as a whole before the season has even begun.....

This just really sucks. It's the NRL's problem first of all, we need concessions for cases like this. It would be so sad seeing Braith leave. The moment he put on a Roosters jersey, he has never looked back. He will be remembered as a Rooster and not a Bulldog, not just to us, but the rest of the League community.

It's so sad, especially for it to come out NOW which could disrupt our harmonious playing group, but knowing the gentleman that Braith is, once again, he will put the team first.

nw its good to see some heart in the supporter base. the major difference i can draw with the fitzy scenario however is that imo, fitzys skills were not redundant as such yet and his salary was not consuming the majority of the cap so it was a little more bitter - for the money he was on and the new concessions in the cap i would loved for fitzy to have stayed on like mini even in a bench capacity whereas i think we are being more forced with braith. shopping him around is wrong though i do agree with that and its not putting a good image in the heads of the youngsters of how young players are treated so hopefully it all goes down well either way.....

I will say this we could be getting caught up in all the hype of our youngsters very easily. Lets face it Braith only just turned 29 he's in the peak of his career and if Cherrington/Cordner/Tasi/Symonds/Leilua just had the season & finals series that he did we'd be creaming ourselves and telling management to offer them 400k, 5 year contracts.

Brian smith starts his true reign

                      Here we go.

                      Divide and conquer.

                      The c will never learn.

In the big picture it a smart move from Brian, but it will lead to division and friction guaranteed. It's not what is needed when the team just missed a premiership
                      barbarian ......arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!!!!!!

not doubt its dissapointing not to be able to keep Braith, but in this salary cap environment keeping Braith means we lose 2 maybe 3 of the following :

                        SKD
                        Kennedy
                        Leilua
                        Cordner
                        Masoe

fans needs to prepare themselves for further player culls as we go through another cycle of upgrading contracts

judging by recent management decisions (assuming the mail about SKD/Kennedy is spot on) the following are considered core players going forward and the rest we will struggle to hold as their contracts come up for extension.

                        Pearce
                        Carney
                        Friend
                        Myles
                        Maubs
                        SKD
                        Kennedy

Harsh but expected, there's no way we can afford to have a lock running around on ~$375k a season with Carney and Pearce also in the team. If he is willing to take a $100k/season paycut then maybe something can be done, but I just don't see that happening.

this decision although heartbreaking is a necessary one and is definitely the most logical option. another 2 years of exceptional leadership or up to 10 years of unlimited potential of 2-3 of our younger players. also its not only what we lose but what other clubs will gain.

one thing i am worried about is the potential fallout from a number of players who might disagree with the decision. the club should not hold out on the players and explain in detail how they came to the decision and how their hands were tied so that the players even though unhappy that braith will be leaving will understand and not hold any grudges.

fingers crossed that braith decides to take a pay cut, despite not being fair would be great to keep him for another year. i definitely would not blame him if he left and thank him for his service.

So here's a question... if a non affiliated organisation i.e The chookpen were to strike up a 3rd party contract with Braith to come on once a month to do a Q&A would be it considered as part of the salary cap or not?

Yeah we have some talented youngsters. But if it comes down to it, I'd rather lose someone like Cherrington (threatened his girlfriend with a knife), no matter how talented, than Anasta (never put a foot wrong, excellent role model and ambassador for Easts and RL, kicked game winning field goal to save our skins when super talents Pearce and Carney couldn't get near the farking thing).
