  • Jonathan Ford to be Carney's Replacement

HE MAY have been wearing dark glasses, but there was no mistaking the familiar face peering over the fence as the Roosters trained at Moore Park yesterday.

Roosters great Brad Fittler has long since moved on from the heartbreak of being shown the door as coach after a disastrous 2009 season, but was this the great man back on deck in an official capacity?

"No, I just needed to get out of the house for a few hours," explained Fittler, as Roosters coach Brian Smith revealed his plan to replace Todd Carney, the man who has stepped into Freddy's shoes as the next great Roosters No. 6. "I'm just enjoying watching some of the teams train, when I can."

Fittler has long been a supporter of Carney's, but yesterday the man who caught his eye was the young player coach Smith has anointed as Carney's likely replacement for their upcoming trial matches, and when the Dally M medallist is on State of Origin duty.

Jonathan Ford, 21, was a standout for Newtown in the NSW Cup last year and played two NRL matches in the centres at the back-end of the 2010 season.

With Carney in doubt for round one, Smith revealed he will trial Ford and captain Braith Anasta in the No. 6 jersey beginning with their first trial against Ipswich in Queensland on February 5.

Smith said Ford and Anasta would also probably form the Roosters halves in the middle of the year when Carney and halfback Mit- chell Pearce are strongly favoured to be lining up in NSW Blues jumpers.

"They're the two that are pencilled in at the moment, but a lot can happen in [half a season of football]," Smith said. "Certainly for a guy like Johno, it's just a chance for us to reward all the work he's put in to pre-season training, and to see how much fitter he is.

"It's a chance for him to show us he deserves the spot."

Smith said the only positive in Carney's injury was that he would now get the chance in his club's three trials to think about how best to fill the massive hole the Pearce-Carney Origin commitments will create.

Smith said Ford was a natural playmaker despite his debut in the centres.

Veteran Anthony Minichiello will captain the Roosters on their trip to Ipswich with Anasta missing the game due to a hamstring complaint.

As for Fittler, he said the Roosters looked "pretty slick" with Ford calling the shots yesterday morning.

"They looked pretty clean, considering they didn't have Mini [Minichiello], Braith, Mitchell or Todd," he said.

Absolutely - great to see. Despite the flack he copped on his coaching stint (a lot of it deserving), I think it would be perfect to see Freddy helping certain players in their roles under the guidance (and discipline!) of Brian Smith. You just can't lose your club legends.

Also good to see Brian with a plan for SOO already. Hopefully this will bring an end to the daily threads started asking who will be the SOO halves....

Jonothan Ford? Really? The game he played against Manly filling in for mini this year was terrible, I cringed every time the ball went near him but i guess he has to start somewhere

His nerves definately got the best of him that game. Compounded by an early injury.

Having watching him last year playing for Newtown, he very much reminds me of Sutton in terms of playing style. Tall, rangy 5/8th who threatens the line up close.

Surely he won't play 7 during Origin ?

Is it possible they could have friendy in the halves? Watts should be back by origin time and him and piggy could share the hooking duties?

By the sounds of it Anasta would play at halfback. He's played there at times for us in the past.

better to give a young guy who's actually a back a go instead of trying to transplant a hooker

Watts will be lucky to play at all next year.

was also a little concerned to see Cordner still icing his knee during recent training sessions, hope he hasn't aggrevated it again.

He did his knee very early in that game I think it was the ninth minute, should lots of ticker to play on after that.

Only got out to a few Jets games last year but he did have a hand in a lot of their tries. Smith obviously has very big wraps on him.

The Roosters will have the biggest halves pairing during SOO if Anasta and Ford end up wearing the 6 and 7 or 7 and 6 jumpers.

I'll trust the coaching staff to know better than me on this combination and certainly won't judge Ford on what he showed last year in his two FG appearances.

fletch, your comments concerning Cordner are somewhat concerning.

Joanthan Ford in the halves ? That's one stupid f*$%en move and comment.

After his performance last year he shouldnt be in the first grade team

Might be harsh but its REALITY BABY!

That's pretty standard after major knee surgery.

Have you ever watched Jonno Ford play in the halves? I know I haven't which is why I won't write him off unti I have and seen him fail more than once.

Don't prejudge the bloke based on a game or two in which he may not have played in his preferred position.

Not every young player takes to the NRL like a duck to water and stand out from day one - many have relative shockers. But that doesn't mean that they won't become established and worthwhile first graders given time and opportunity.
