although happy to see a contract extension for SKD, no player should be given a 5 year deal, anything can happen in that time like we have seen with Mini.

Mundine is a good athlete,But he has a big mouth and not the ability to back it! Green as anyone who knows boxing was far from his fitting weight['a shadow of himself'] kessler and ottke, were unheard of like all of the nobodies he fought.Geale didn't knock him out but he did beat him! Khoder try twice, offering Woods the 100k then later 200k, to pull out of the Mundine fight. Woods refused to pull out, camp mundine knew what was coming.[THE DAY AUSTRALIAN BOXING HAD BEEN WHAITING FOR]. By the way what happened to the mouth fighting Green at whatever weight in a rematch?[the mouth knew he would definatley taste the canvas if this eventuated] .Mundine has made good money and shown his lack of respect for boxing, time to retire CHUMP.

Green was the one with the big mouth! He went after Mundine and made excuses when he lost. Last I heard Green turned his back on a rematch and is now in danger of never fighting again. I happen to know a bit about boxing too, spelling and grammar too for that matter, and when the two blokes were in the ring there was one winner. And it wasn't Danny Green.

Ottke has a record of 34 wins and 0 losses as a professional... a nobody? Kessler was WBA & WBC Super Middleweight champion... another nobody?

If you're going to engage in a discussion, at least use facts, not dribble you hear on AM radio.

          To get back on topic:

Will the long-term deal help or hinder SKD ?

From one perspective, his mind can concentrate on football no that his future is settled.

From another, i question whether he will be as motivated given that he is not playing for a contract anymore. The great thing about 2-3 year contracts is that it keeps the player on their toes and striving to perform.

Still, i'm very surprised that he got such an amount on the back of a standout year. The coaches must be priming him for something big.

Good points Mike - this situation is potentially a double-edged sword in terms of SKD's motivation and performance and unless you are SKD or know him very well, we can only speculate as to which way this will develop.

no doubt Mundine was the superior fighter when he and Green met, but that was partly helped by Green's tactics in that fight to try and dance and outbox him. That was never going to happen - Green's only chance was to mix it but he didn't do that

Mundine should have ditched his management and moved away from having his father so heavily involved years ago. He's 35 or whatever now and his best years are highly likely to be behind him. The legs can go pretty quickly in your mid 30's.

In years to come he'll regret the fact that he didn't have a proper crack 5 years ago

To get back on topic, it's not the amount that I have a problem with. It's the length.

Will he have the same drive next season, given that he is not worried about his financial security anymore?

I hope that he continues his newfound good form, but to outlay such an investment on a player who still has some bug shortcomings is a big risk.

Before any long term deals are signed we need to see continued improvement certain aspects of his game such as:

                  1. Draw and pass
                  2. Reading in defence
                  3. Playing the ball without losing posession
                  4. Giving away less penalties at the ruck

If he continues the improvement he showed in the back end of last season, then sure sign him long term.

No sh*t Sherlock. That's the whole point. It's why he has the persona he has. Fairfax covers most of my thoughts on the matter in his earlier posts.

Back to SKD. It seems you are only really seeking an argument, which I have no real time for. I will however reiterate, very few players deserve a 5 year contract. Many lose the hunger required to stay at their peak. There is no questioning his improvement, but 6 months doesn't prove he can maintain that level for the coming 5 years (and the original post refers to beginning 2012 which makes it 6 years). What if he is seriously injured? We keep paying his contract. Simply too much risk.

Don't get me wrong, I'm confident he will continue to improve, but all players go through form slumps.

                        I couldn't be less interested.

I don't know if I've ever seen a player improve as much as skd did between 09-10

that said, 5 year deals are dangerous for all the reasons already mentioned. He also has way too many errors in his game, and he just doesn't strike me as a long term player in the NRL for some reason

hoping to be wrong about him again though

                              I'd give Kosta that credit.

The club came up with a youth policy in 2007 and it's good to see they're still following through on it. The Perrett & Pearce re-signings also came under massive scrutiny and apart from a few stubborn supporters most are enjoying their humble pie in quiet.

                                4-5 year contracts are what player managers are chasing these days;

                                Lachlan Coote - 4 years

Time to get used to it, just the way it is. With a new TV deal and subsequently a rise in the salary cap coming plus two new teams entering the competition signing our most talented outside back to a long term deal is good business. I hope this comes off along with a few more long deals especially Carney.
