  • Opinions on the GF

They really DID do well in first half, I reckon they got a little too ahead of themselves in the second..
made too many mistakes, still in the habit of forwards passes and bit dissapointed on our defences..
I'm praying to god that carneys alright and the other boys with their injuries, the boys put on a good fight and didn't give up til the end..
did a mighty good job and hopefully looking forward for better results next year. who else is with me?

My opinion is that the ref's made too many mistakes that influenced the game and the score in the end...way too many for a Grand Final...they were supposed to be the best ref's we have...they were abysmal...

They didn't play well in the first half at all. They should have put them to the sword when Saints were buckling under the pressure getting ready to choke. Instead, we let them off the hook. Another try before half time and even the refs would not have saved them.

You are right foghorn about all the referees errors. You forgot one error. The hornby pass to nightingale..the pass was before the 20 metre line and it landed the otherside of the line....another forward pass and at 12-8 a crucial try that should have been a no try ! After that and 18-8 with the rain we had been well and truly done over.

Spot on JT. That's where we lost it

and why the call by the linesman on the pass from Carney to BJ was crucial. It would have been our 3rd try in 10mins and, I believe, we would have run away with it

As for the refereeing decisions it disappoints me that the benefit of the doubt went to St George not only in the GF but in the match against the Tigers. When trailing 6-0 St George received 5 penalties in a row which were all pedantic and could be given to any team at any time during the game, this kept the Tigers out of the game and when a legitimate penalty should have been given for knees to the back of Lote Tuiquiri they didn't give it.

It's almost as though they wanted them to win and you had to play twice as good as St George to win.

BUT I am extremely proud of the team for achieving so much but they need to build on this and get even better.

As for Brian Smith, I really wanted him to win his first one against Wayne Bennett, when you coach virtually a state of origin team for 20 years of course you're going to 5 or 6 comps.

Was that the try after Perrett was pushed or after Young fell over playing the ball?

Also, people have mentioned for the Fien try that Hornby was offside but nobody has pointed out that they pushed our marker.

I haven't watched that part of the game again but everyone seems to think the pass was ok.

The overhead angle showed it was a good pass. All the commentators agreed it was a fair pass except Gould who didn't comment.

I watched the replay this morning and the pass was fair. Todd just laughed at the touchie when the replay was shown on the big screen

It was a flick pass that went back off the hands - whether it travelled forward is not an issue.

Not sure what was wrong with Gould, he was so biased towards St George. In the second half when we threw a forward pass (turning point IMO) he was screaming for a penalty. Ray Warren had to tell him that they can't give if it had already happened 3 or 4 times in the first half.

I still remember 2002 so not winning the grand final doesn't hurt.

As much as I dislike St George/Illawarra I cannot begrude their twin set of long suffering fans who haven't tasted victory for 31 years.

And anyway, after the last few years, with the now mercifully gone Finch and the Fittler foul up, to even get to the grand final was beyond belief.

For a team that was, being honest, a ramshackle bunch, to achieve what they did was impressive.

                          I'm proud of them.
