Dragons fans have been proclaiming it for the past week, but yesterday it was made official.
Wollongong City will be a "[DELETED]-free zone" this weekend.
In the spirit of grand finals week, and in conjunction with our Dragons-mad Wollongong council general manager, our city has officially kicked the [DELETED] off the roost for the long weekend.
David Farmer said [DELETED] were considered to be inappropriate in the city generally due to noise levels, and this weekend they were likely to be at their worst.
"This weekend we're taking that to the next level, and declaring Wollongong a [DELETED]-free zone," he said yesterday.
"For one thing, [DELETED] are loud, upsetting people by crowing way too early.
"And for all that loud noise, they really don't have any substance."
He took aim at the [DELETED]s' gait, too.
"All they do is strut around, preening their feathers, expecting everybody to admire their plumage," he said.
"Or, in the case of Todd Carney and Daniel Conn, their tattoos."
But Mr Farmer, although a die-hard Dragons supporter, said the council had reservations about the presence of another grand final mascot in Wollongong backyards.
"While [DELETED] are not welcome in the city this weekend, council also does have some concerns about keeping dragons in the backyard, as they may scare pets and present a fire risk."
Illawarra Steelers director Bob Millward wholeheartedly supported Mr Farmer's declaration of Wollongong as a [DELETED]-free zone this weekend, saying while he didn't wish any harm on any [DELETED], dragons should be at the forefront of people's minds.
