How do you beat the Dragons/Titans
I dont think the gameplan that is required is very complex, it is just that excecution is difficult.
1. Limit the number of times they are tackled in your 20, both these teams take very few risks until they are camped on your line, you limit the amount of times they get to your line you limit the points they score. The way you limit these tackles is through error minimisation, defensive line speed and an accurate kicking game. Two of these are obvious, you obviously need to cut down errors/penalties, and line speed is central to the modern game. The point about kicking is less obvious, the Dragons get almost no repeat sets, which means if you can force them to start their set well inside their own territory you go along way to limit their points, they tend to role out of their territory based on quick playtheball and forwards recieving the ball right on the advantage line, if you can kick the ball dead or out it gives your line time to set and slow the first two play the balls down. this also takes preston and darius out of the game. it is also vital for your markers to be well set to stop the balls from the hooker to a front rower on the advantage line if they move quickly they place themsleves in a position to make dominant tackles.
On the titans you also have to stop Prince going across field, he draws defenders out of the line and isolates one on ones with the channel between second rower and centre, this is our strongest defensive channel with maubs and braith and yet we still should watch prince. The way to stop him is simple....line speed dont let him go sideways by getting forward and continuing to move forward.
Do these things they dont score points.
For us to score points we need to break down very good ruck defence and good control of the ruck. Once again this is reasonably simple....quick play the balls, dummy halfrunners moving forward not sideways and quick shifting of the ball. Both these teams have their weakest defensive channel between centre and second rower, where rogers and toopi defend as well as soward. We can exploit this by quick ball to Carney moving sideways. to set this up we need pearce going straight and playing direct he did this well last week so i imagine he will do so again, this keeps strong defenders in tight and dosent allow them to slide carney out of room. The role of Aubusson and minichiello is key here, they are the hole runners off both carney and pearce, their decisions over when to play close and exploit tired front rowers and when to play wide off the shoulders off carney and anasta is central to us making line breaks.
We must also maximise our 5th tackle options, target both their wingers in the air as leilua and SKD are both strong in this category. Many forget in the bomb happy days of 08 how good skd was in the air when moving forward, this in my opinion is an underutilized weapon. Early we must be patient and look for repeat sets, make bailey make a lot of tackles and turn and chase a lot, stop his go forward and their small back row will be isolated, stopping their go forward.
