  • Warea-Hargreaves - "We're not soft"

    very glad to hear this...

NOBODY has said publicly, but the Roosters forward pack is aware of what has been said behind their backs.

That the only way to beat the tri-colours is to run through the middle of them.

Now Roosters hardman Jared Waerea-Hargreaves has revealed he and his fellow forwards have been stung by criticism they are "soft" and are using it as motivation as they make their bold attempt to snatch the premiership.

"Everyone has been talking about the way to beat the Roosters was through the forwards, up the middle," the 21-year-old Kiwi international told The Daily Telegraph last night. "That's where to get us. But in the last month we've come together and talked about earning some respect by giving it back to them.

"The criticism did sting us. No forward pack wants to be known as soft up the middle. You don't want to hear that. It stings you a bit but we feel like we've improved a lot."

Indeed, the Roosters pack has muscled up at the pointy end of the season but their have been doubts for most of the season.

In the first half against the Wests Tigers last weekend, they were simply steamrolled in possession.

They can expect a torrid time in Saturday night's semi-final against Penrith at the Sydney Football Stadium.

While the Panthers are reeling from season-ending injuries to back-rowers Frank Pritchard and Trent Waterhouse, they are sure to be inspired by the return of captain Petero Civoniceva from a two-game suspension.

Waerea-Hargreaves knows the skipper well. Playing for New Zealand against Australia in the Four Nations opener in London last October, the rookie sledged the veteran prop as an "old man".

While some Kangaroos players privately considered the remarks disrespectful and promised retribution later in the tournament, Civoniceva laughed it off.

"We had a beer a week after and he said to me he respected me and he respected players that front up and don't take a backward step," he recalled.

"Words from a bloke like that is breathtaking.

"I wasn't trying to be dis- respectful. I said it to be respected. I wasn't going to take a backward step. We're not playing to lose, we're playing to win. I was doing what was best for the team."

Asked if he intended to sledge Civoniceva again, he grinned: "I'll do what's best for the team. He'll be up for a big one."

That endorsement has only encouraged Waerea-Hargreaves to become the enforcer that has emerged throughout this season.

He insisted he had shaken off the ill-effects of the 80th-minute tackle from Tigers replacement Simon Dwyer - and that the tackle many believed was high was a "good, clean and legit hit".

But he scoffed at claims from Manly and Bulldogs hitman David Gillespie that it was "the most brutal tackle of the last decade".

"I didn't think too much of it," he said. "It was a great hit but I can't believe the hype about it."

JWH has shown more class about this than the whole Wests tigers club. I'm proud of him!

I like the bit about "well play them up the middle".

Look for an expansive game from Carney and Pearce and lots of ball out wide.

We're not "soft" in the middle third but we do have a (deserved) rep for giving up soft meters there.

It's all part of our problems with refs, dominant tackles and penalties. Friend and Jaubs are leg tacklers from marker but we are often slow to get a second tackler in, leading either to a penalty or a quick ptb.
It's scientifically impossible for Easts to be in Souths' shadow when there's daylight between them and us.

I thought the way everyone tries to beat is is through our right side defense.

            absolutely correct

and it'll be the death of us on Saturday if they don't assert some dominance in the middle

I've said it for years our wrestling and defence from marker is very poor. We make good tackles but the we don't secure the tackled player on the ground. I've seen Mose and Kennedy make big tackles but they let the other bloke get up straight away.

Other teams know we are poor there and just keep going there, the Tigers kept angling in behind our markers all night. Penrith will do the same on Saturday and so will any team we play this year.

It's about possession. It doesn't matter how tough a forward pack is if they are too tired to tackle or take hit-ups.

                  Spot on BUDDY and fitzy.

The other aspect JWH doesn't mention is that the Roosters forwards don't make the yardage in attack at times that could be expected of them - they've gained good ground in about half the games they've played. Getting 20 metres to 30 metres from a set of six is to my mind pathetic.

                      Winner right here.

Watch how Saints illegally hold the ball during the tackle, grubs like Prior and Saffy should be penalised every tackle but get away with murder at the ruck....we try that shit and we get arse raped by the referees.

If this betting scandal ring doesn't involved referees I'll be baffled, the favouritism week in/week out towards certain teams is beyond suspicious for me.

                            2 options Andy

                            1) learn to do it better/smarter so that we don't get penalised

                            2) keep everything as it is and continue to struggle in the middle

I think we get penalised for it because we do it poorly, and also becasue we try and do it when we're on the back foot and getting rolled in the middle

as such it looks that little bit more obvious when compared with the sides who do it well

If we get pinged for it and the other team doesn't then Anasta needs to continue to hound the ref each time it happens to us like Farah does.
