How Todd Carney almost became Dragon

MAN-of-the-moment Todd Carney has revealed how a private meeting with Wayne Bennett almost convinced him to revive his career at St George Illawarra.

As he prepares to face Bennett's Dragons in tomorrow's SCG blockbuster, the Roosters talisman last night told The Daily Telegraph how the master coach offered him a possible lifeline in Wollongong last year.

Banned from playing NRL after his sacking from Canberra in mid-2008, Carney met with Bennett a few months later to discuss a return in the Red V this season. During their meeting, Bennett even offered Carney the chance to play halfback - but further negotiations collapsed when the exiled star was also prevented from playing for St George Illawarra's NSWRL feeder club, Shellharbour, in 2009.

"I met with Wayne and that was great," Carney recalled. "There were a few clubs interested and I was close to going [to St George Illawara].

"I went down to Wollongong, to my manager's [David Riolo's] house, and that's where we met.

"I've never been so nervous before meeting someone before. After all the things I'd heard and read about Wayne Bennett, I didn't know what to expect.

"But he was completely different to the person you see in the media. He was cracking jokes and made me feel really comfortable.

"I really enjoyed the talk we had.

"Like [Roosters coach Brian Smith], Wayne made it clear that he wasn't worried about the past as long as it was behind me.

"What we spoke about was really appealing, because we discussed the opportunity to play in the No. 7 at the Dragons.

"The problem was they couldn't get me into their reserve grade [Shellharbour] because Canberra and the NSWRL blocked me. St George Illawarra wanted to wait until the end of the year.

"But if I was going to come back to the NRL, I wanted to know a long way beforehand so I could prepare mentally for that team."

That team ended up being the Roosters, who offered Carney a handsome three-year contract that - unlike offers from elsewhere - wasn't incentive-based.

The 24-year-old also revealed that he had "verbally agreed" to join the Roosters before moving to Atherton last April, and had to contend with plenty of locals trying to persuade him to backflip as the Tricolours endured their most traumatic season on record in 2009.

"People kept asking me why I didn't go to St George Illawarra because they were going so well under Wayne. But it's strange - the way the Roosters finished was probably a good thing for me. As a club they were at the point where they needed to prove something - just like myself."

    this was certainly unexpected...

thankgod this didnt happen!!! we would have been getting ready for mad monday instead of the finals now!!

Its good to see brian had faith in him by offering all 3 years that showed Todd we really had a good oppinion of him changing his ways and its also good to see he didnt want to head straight into a team that was going good we were at the time where we were trying to change are image and we now have the motto New Start New Beginning and thats where Todd saw an oppurtunity for himself to rebuild his status as a good kid & great footballer i just hope he doesnt feel the need to help another club when his contract is up from ours

Brian wouldn't of offered him that contract...

I knew the Dragons and Tigers were major players for his signature just didn't realise how close the Dragons actually were.

Credit must go to Peter O'Sullivan for persuing Todd & persuading him to kick start his career in Sydney.
I'm glad the club is standing by & supporting POS in regards to the Storms allegations.
POS is a very, very important part of our club going forward. Everybody knows and bags us about our lack of juniors.....well POS and his assistant Jamie Mathiou (Qld based) are doing a fine job finding quality players to wear the RW&B.

POS and his friends are doing their best to continue the lack of local kids being signed up by the Roosters. He needs to open his eyes and look beyond his little pet areas.
There are 3 locals I know that should be signed, not just my opinion because there are otther clubs circling and POS does not give a shit

Who are these locals? Are they in the Harold Matts side?

Other clubs like who? St. George, or Cronulla? Because there's a big difference. Look at Brad Murray - he's decent, but nothing extraordinairy, and from what I've heard, only the Sharks, who are desperate to find a decent half, are after him.

KB, surely something can be done about this in terms of bringing these locals to POS's attention. It would certainly benefit the Roosters to have real local juniors playing for them if they're good enough rather than similar quality players from outside the area and state.

It was my turn to choke when I saw that. The thought of it almost happening is truly scary.

Oh, and as for Carney almost being a stmerge player, PHEW. It seems to me the combination of Smith, a straight out decent 3 year contract (no incentives) and a team in disarray conspired in the Roosters' favour. Thank good fortune for that.

I certainly hope something can be done, but as it stands he is not interested in even looking at these kids.
Its very true we don't have many juniors, but there are some kids that have it and they need the opportunity.
One of the 3 mentioned is still 15 this year and will play HMs next year again. This kids is sensational and vey well may not be doing it with the Roosters.

Wayne Bennett blew getting two gun players in Kane Linnett and Todd Carney.

The fact that they both play for the Roosters makes that knowledge doubly pleasurable.
