  • How the team has developed from 2008...

    2008 -> 2010

    Perrett - Minichiello
    Roberts - Perrett
    Soliola - Kenny-Dowall
    Aubusson - Linnett
    Kenny-Dowall - Graham
    Anasta - Carney
    Pearce - Pearce
    O'Meley - Ryles
    Aubusson - Friend
    Myles - Myles
    Tupou - Nuuausala
    Fitzgibbon - Aubusson
    Sa - Anasta

    Brown - Kouparitsas
    Paea - Masoe
    Mason - Hargreaves
    Shillington - Kennedy/Conn

What can be really seen here, I believe, is that the addition of Carney to five-eighth and Linnett to the centres has forced two of the most attacking moves that we have made in a long time - Anasta has now shifted to lock, and Aubusson into the second row. These changes have allowed our forward pack to have a slightly more attacking edge, much like when we used to have noted linebreakers Tupou and Flannery. I do think Anasta to lock has affected our defense SLIGHTLY, as he might be a wholehearted player but his technique is a bit iffy and he doesn't always wrap up the ball. But the benefits it has had to our attacking structure far outweight any negatives.

To add to this, former 'raw' rookies like Myles, Perrett, SKD, Pearce, Nuuausala, Friend and Aubusson have had a bit more experience to improve themselves as players by all trying their hearts out during the nightmare that was 2009, while teammates who were on big money but were chronic underperformers (Tupou, Roberts, Mason, Soliola, and to a lesser extent Sa and J Aubusson) are being cleaned out for youth who are playing to earn their stripes.

What we lacked in 2009 was a fully fit O'Meley. Look back at 2007 - Nutley made a huge difference. He was replaced by Ogre in 2008, who made a big impact too. And in 2010 Ryles is doing the same thing. They were signed at the backend of their NRL careers to lead our young tyros, and it is working very well.
