Sydney Roosters vs. Canberra Raiders – Match Preview

After a horrible return back to the losing list, the Sydney Roosters take on a side who managed to win their first game away from home this season. While this match will be important for both teams to get the two points, it's Todd Carney who will get the headlines when he takes on his old club at his new home ground.

Alleluia! A break from Channel 9
The Roosters will finally get their first game of the season that will not be covered by the Channel 9 commentary team, who have recently come under fire from many Roosters supporters (inclusive of the ones on the Chookpen forum) over the way they talk about the Roosters team. Hopefully they can now play pressure-free and scintillating football like they did in rounds 1 and 2.

    The Carnage Boost and Payback
Todd Carney gave the Roosters all something to smile about on Wednesday morning when he was doing a live blog on the Daily Telegraph’s website. A few users asked questions about whether he wants to move back to Canberra to play at the Raiders, but he replied with this:

“I have signed a 3 year deal at the Roosters and I don’t think I will play there. I’m pretty focused on staying at the Roosters,” and “I am contracted for 3 years mate - and I won’t be going anywhere for now. I am hoping to stay long term too.”

In saying this, and given his recent form, the Roosters should snatch at the opportunity and give him a long term contract, as I’m sure almost everyone (Roosters fans) will agree with.

After expressing his disappointment in the same blog that he was disappointed that the Raiders didn’t at least let him play at one of their feeder clubs, everyone should be expecting a big show from the young man, and hopefully give his new team another over his old one.

    Team News

    Sydney Roosters
The Roosters have been hurt with the news that James Aubusson will spend 2-4 weeks on the sideline, although can cheer with a return coming at the same time. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves has been announced fit to play and will take jersey #16 and come off the bench, but don’t be surprised to see him start.

    Canberra Raiders
The Raiders have no fresh injury concerns to worry about and have stuck solid to the squad that took the pitch against the Eels.

    How they line up

    Players to Watch

    Sydney Roosters – Todd Carney
AS IF HE WOULDN’T BE! Todd Carney wants this game to go as plan, as do the rest of the team, and get two points over his former employers. He has been in awesome form so far this year, picking up 8 Dally M points in the process and is in equal second place, only 1 behind the in-form Isaac Luke. Expect Carney to have a world class game.

    Canberra Raiders – Terry Campese
Todd Carney’s replacement has been by far Canberra’s best player so far this season, and the way he’s going, he won’t be pipped by any other player. He has been an integral part of his team and will no doubt want to get one over his mate at the SFS and grab his team another away victory.

    Mouth-watering Match Ups

    Todd Carney vs. Josh Dugan
It’s the title for battle of the speedsters up for grabs as Carney and Dugan, two extremely important players for their respective teams try to get their team the best possible chance of winning. Dugan has done a very important job for his team, managing 808 metres and getting his team up the pitch this season, while Carney is able to rely on the rest of his backline, especially his right side, with the three averaging 640 metres each. Expect both to have some awesome moments.

    Phil Graham vs. Joel Thompson
“Todd! It’s my old team too!” Phil Graham also plays against his former side this week after playing his older centre pair last week and will be determined to do much better this week. His defence has been tough to contend with this season, and his attack a whole lot better, expect this battle to be very heated.

What the Chookpen forum members thinkChookpen forum members were polled on the result of the match, with just over 75% going for a Roosters win with just over 45% overall going for the win by 1-12 points. They were also asked on their predictions on the match, who to watch out for and what each team needs to do to get the win. Here were the pick of the responses:

“If the Roosters want to bounce back from Sunday's performance, they need to reduce the errors coming out of our own half.” – Billy Gunn

“If the Roosters control the possession the Raiders will fold like a chair. They are an erratic team and are at their best when the other team plays the same” – BigMike

“These sides are both so erratic you'd expect the Raiders to fold after having to play Monday and travel in consecutive weeks, and the Roosters to aim up like they did after the Canterbury match. If this happens: Roosters 13+” – redwhiteandbluester

“I'll tip the Chooks on this one. I honestly think Canberra's young players will be too much to handle out wide if they play to their potential with the likes of Josh Dugan, Daniel Vidot, Joel Thompson and Jarrod Croker. Add Terry Campese and they will play a very expansive game. BUT having said that, they are terrible on the road and for that very reason I think the chooks will get up. Roosters by 1-12” – footy

“If the chooks play to their abilty, like they did against the Rabbitohs and Tigers, then they should win comfortably. If they play like they have in the last couple of weeks, they will be beaten. But I have faith. Roosters 13+” – roosta4life

    Prediction
Both teams have been extremely inconsistent this year, but when it comes to the Canberra Raiders at the Sydney Football Stadium, the Sydney Roosters are extremely consistent, with something like a 13-4 advantage at home. In saying this, and referring to last year, in which the Roosters beat the Raiders by 28-4 in a season where the Roosters were the cellar dwellers, could only mean they could do better this year. Expect Brian Smith to have drilled into his players that only consistency can win them the Premiership, and although this will be a harder match than last year, I am sure the same outcome will occur. WATCH OUT FOR JWH!

Collecting their paychecks... and that is about it!!

In an era where sports men and women actually work hard to make a career out of sport, we have a team of rugby league players in the Eastern Suburbs who have the audacity to impersontate "committed" sportsmen and put their hands out for ridiculously high pay cheques each week!!

From the biggest myth in the game, Braith Anasta, through to football rejects like Ryles and Graham, the Roosters are more worried about getting their melons in the Sydney social pages than putting some heart into their footy!!!

On Anasta, I have been a loyal supporter of his from many years when friends and foes have relentlessly bagged him. But after watching each of the matches this year I realise he truly is the most overrated player in the game!! Maybe that is a little too harsh because you have to be actually "RATED" to be overrated. He couldn't bust an egg let alone a tackle. His kicking game is worse than the front rower for my sons under 12's team getting thrown the ball on the last tackle and told to punt it! I would go as far to say that he is the slowest player in the game. How in the world does he play 5/8? In fact, how in the world is he captain and how is he still playing 1st grade???

Much respect goes out to Mitchell Pearce who "seems" to turn up each week and try to put his best foot forward. BUT I really wonder if his best foot forward is good enough?? Has Mitchell Pearce "ever" won a game for the Roosters much like Thurston does for the Cowboys every week? He is certainly no game breaker!!! I will go far as to say that if selected for NSW, I will be backing Qld 3-0. Thurston will eat him up and spit him out. In saying that I do believe he still has potential. But time is ticking and being a player with "great potential" is hardly what a team in the modern NRL game needs!! There are 18 y.o kids who have stepped up to the plate faster than him.

And Brian Smith the saviour of the Roosters. Well the jury is well and truly out on you at the moment. All we ever hear is that Smithy will straighten that team up. He will get them into line.....blah blah blah! Apart from the first game (Rabbits didnt show up at all) his defensive structure has been woeful. As for attack, well looks like we are going to see another 21 rounds of bombs from the Roosters! The good old bomb from the 40m is such a leathal attacking option. The Penrith game resembled something from the movie Pearl Harbour. When in doubt, hoist the bomb. Please Brian after all your years in football, haven't you got some plays that you can teach our players to use? can't you motivate them enough tackle for the entire 80mins and not 8 mins??? Please tell me you have something more than what you have shown.

Finally on a bright note, thank god for Todd Carney. Not only a revelation on the field but a young man clearly getting his life in order. Keep it up and don't let the rest of the bludgers in the team hold you back. And yes there is no other word to describe them other than bludgers!!!! If you are geniune rugby league supporter and follower of the game, take a quick look at the Penrith line up last week vs the Roosters line up. "ON PAPER" there was no way in hell that Penrith should have beaten us last week. Something is seriously wrong when you get Flogged with a captial "F" by Penrith's unknowns. And don't kid yourself if you think otherwise.

FINALLY, I can't help but laugh when I read the Roosters corporate positioning line "New Attitude, New Beginning". To me, it is the same old garbage wrapped up in a different parcel. If this is the "new attitude" somebody please HELP THE ROOSTERS! Maybe one of the fellow supporters could ring me when something changes because I ain't going to another game until then!! For the past 30+ years I have been the most loyal of Roosters fans. And I will continue to do so. But I have had enough of this rubbish. Show some ticker so we can at least wear or jerseys with some PRIDE!!

While we search back through the history books to find ONE game, others halves are doing it week in week out. He needs to put on some size, toughen up and learn to direct some traffic around the field. And he will need to do it fast, because if by some stupid reason the NSW selectors pick him as halfback, his Jonathon Thurston nightmare isn't too far away!!!

taking a pass with no-one in front of you and running off downfield is not what was referred to in terms of a halback winning you games a la Thurston

With you there BigMike. How anyone can compare is beyond me. What was Thurston doing at 21. Prince? Kimmorley or even Cronk.

Please. It's like comparing a pimple faced prop with Civo or Pricey.

If you need a recent example of Pearce dominance, just think back to the Souths or Tigers games.
I thought he was on top of his game, setting up tries, finishing them off.

The problem is, he has Carney and Braith to contend with so to speak so an individual performance might be hard to notice.

Whereas Thurstaon is a one man team, he has nobody around him of substance thus standing out much more.

By Pearce's 21st birthday, he had played 69 games, all of them starting at halfback.

By Thurston's 21st birthday, he had played 26 games, 10 off the bench with greatly limited involvement.

I doubt Pearce will ever be as good as Thurston and comparisons between their skill at present is pointless, but when you consider their achievements at the same age, Pearce's record stands out.

its an easy comparison. If chosen for NSW, he will be playing head to head with the best in the game. If he is good enough to be NSW halfback, he can handle the comparison. There are many teenagers in the NRL who are some of the best in the game. Maybe we should wait around for 3 or 4 more years so Mitchell can grows into his skin and then hits top form?????

Your argument is complete rubbish - there is not a halfback in the world who can compete with Thurston - the guy is on another level. In NSW, there is noone who even gets close. So, no matter who gets picked, they won't match JT. Pearce is a better option than some. That said, I don't think he should be picked, yet.

You are the only person drawing that pointless comparison and talking about State of Origin when it is completely irrelevant to Pearce's contribution to the Roosters.

The comparison is between Pearce's and Thurston's ability to turn a match. Presently, its an obvious mismatch. A more accurate comparison would be between the men at the same stage of their career, and Pearce has Thurston well covered.

And broadly, I don't think it would be worthwhile ever comparing them because they play different roles within the side. Pearce is more of a scrappy director kind of a halfback and players like Carney and Anasta should be providing the silky skill. At North Queensland, Thurston has never played inside brilliant five-eighths and he fills the role of playmaker.

Sure, Thurston is a better player, but comparisons between the two are a waste of time.
